This is Starting to Feel Real-PreSurgery Jitters?

Recommended Posts

Thanks for all the feedback. I see my surgeon Thursday. Getting closer to knowing when. I have started on the Multivitamins and the B12 has already given me a little boost of energy. That surprised me. Still haven't been able to bring myself to try the shakes. Crazy I know. I have been trying to put myself into the mind set of this new reality. Trying to Change my way of thinking about food and I think it is working. Went out to eat this weekend and I could hardly eat anything. I haven't told my boss that I am having weight loss surgery. Not sure if I will. I think I will just tell him it is something "female" related so he won't ask questions. Don't want to tell my business. I work with all men and don't think they would be very understanding anyway. I'll just let them think I am doing it the old fashioned way. Did you all tell your employers or did you keep it to yourself?

Wigster, good luck and welcome! We have tried every Protein Powder. Bariatric Advantage from the surgeon's office is too chalky for me, and slimy (sorry) if you don't add lots of ice. My husband tolerates it, not me. I bought EAS at Walmart, and it was approved by the nutritionist. The powder is cheaper than BA. Personal favorite is Premier Protein from Sam's Club or costco, 30 grams Protein in one shake.

I just ordered Puritan whey, BOGO, because I heard on a thread it was good and I plan to make a lot of iced shakes into the summer months. I would highly recommend you try to get samples before buying big containers of powders.

After surgery we are not allowed fruit, and willing to forego it anyway because of our diabetes. smoothies so good with the fruits though LOL. Try Torani SF syrups with your shakes, available in the grocery store in the coffee section.

Best of luck everyone!

Hi there! I just got approved and have a surgery date of Feb 3rd. I also asked myself "whoa, what am I doing?" Then I reminded myself that I have tried every other answer under the sun and none of them ever worked long term. I know that this is my last chance and it is the way that will work for me. Cutting out 80% of my stomach! What? Yep, I'm willing to do this so that I can live my life fully and eliminate the health problems I have. I want to be here for my grandkids and great grand kids and I KNOW this will work. I have wasted too many years on trying to lose weight. I'm done with the roller coaster. This is the last attempt and it WILL work! It can work for you too. Have you tried EVERYTHING ELSE? Best wishes to you!

Hi Tamik78-

Congrats on getting your date! What really hit home for me on realizing my need for this surgery was during the initial questionnaire at my first consultation. They ask your weight and dieting history, then what was the most you've ever lost at one time. I had to think a bit, then realized it was just 30 pounds in 1988! I was floored because I thought I had done more than that. I've also spent two decades dieting and gaining that it seemed I'd lost more than 30. It dawned on me then that the odds of dropping 120 pounds and keeping it off were very low. I'm very active but I definitely have emotional issues with food. No amount of exercise has ever fixed that. I hope to get scheduled in Feb.

Hi wigster,

I'm a newbie here too, so bear with me :)

I think it's totally NORMAL to have jitters, you wouldn't be human if you didn't. This is major surgery and the surgeon is removing part of your stomach that will NEVER be able to be reversed. Trust me, I've been exactly where you are....questioning what the heck am I doing. I haven't been sleeved YET....but I'm on my way, my surgery date is 2/3/14. I know for me, the sleeve is the procedure I'm most comfortable with. My grandma ALWAYS says, "Angie, think positive" so that's the attitude I'm going into this surgery with. I will make this new tool work for me, I have to, otherwise it's not worth it.....just my thoughts, hope it helps

When doubt creeps in I struggle a lot with being positive. Then I think of all of the benefits of this surgery and get excited all over again. It's definitely a roller coaster ride of emotions.

Hi all- I meet with Dr. Lavin this Thursday to go over everything and sign consent forms. Yowza!

Because I'm paying out of pocket the scheduler said I could probably get a date by mid- February!' I find I'm mentally shifting for this enormous change; preparing for my break up

with food. I go from elated to sad to afraid in a continuous cycle. I search the net looking for confirmation that I'm doing the right thing. I do know for sure that I'm ready to get this monkey off my back and this seems like the best option after years of yo yo dieting with little success . So glad I have this forum for support. Thanks.

I know. I swear it keeps me awake at night and it's like an obsession

No date set this month. :-(. The surgeon was very pleased with my weight loss ( down 20 pounds this mouth) but my liver still feels too large. He wants me to loose more weight and we will see next month. He also pushed quite hard for me to consider a bypass but I will not budge on that. I am firm in my decision on the sleeve. So I have another month of sleepless nights.

My surgeon initially said he would only consider bypass for me because I have had acid reflux for 15+ years. I said it was sleeve or nothing as that was the only procedure I was willing to have (I chose it because it maintains normal digestion). He sent me for an endoscopy which showed polyps in my stomach. Then he said the only procedure he would consider for me was the sleeve so that my gastroenterologist could continue to monitor the polyps over time. I don't care why he changed his mind, I am just glad that he did!

I have the same jitters. I have jumped through all the hoops and was told I would be a January surgery. However, I am waiting for insurance approval and that is making me a wreck. If I would just get a date so I can get on with my life! I have ordered the sample packs of Protein but haven't tried them yet. Good luck to everyone. Keep posting. It helps.

I pushed mine from January to February Bc I had too much on my plate with my daughter's school activities. It sucks but it gives me another month to get my head on straight. You just gang in there and it'll be here before you know it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
