I am approved! Gettin nervous...can I do the pre op diet?

Recommended Posts

I was officially approved for the sleeve today. I anticipate surgery in approx. 3 weeks. I'm so excited and I feel so blessed that I am getting a second chance at life! I am beginning to have so many health problems that I am sure are caused by or aggravated by my weight. But I am SO nervous! I don't want to fail one more time. I have battled weight ALL my life and this is my last chance. I need suggestions on how to stay on a liquid diet for 2 whole weeks. How is this possible when I couldn't even do Weight Watchers that allows REAL food?

There are no support groups where I live so I am going to count on you all to help me through this. I have 100 pounds to lose. But first, I need to get ready for the surgery. Help!

Has your doctors office confirmed that you need to do 2 weeks of the liquid diet? I know everyone's Dr./insurance is different but I only had to fast the night before, no two week diet. If your sure you have to do two weeks I would start off with two shakes a day (breakfast and lunch) and a full meal for the first week so you can work yourself up to the two week liquid diet then in won't be so much of a shock. I started off with one shake a day for the first 3 months and then I did two shakes a day and a full meal for 3 months. I lost 15 pounds doing that. I am sure you will do great. Look at the reward at the end of all this.

This is so important that you follow this diet to a tee. It is shrinking your liver so the dr has more room in there to do the surgery. My advise and what I did was eat everywhere and everything I wanted before the start of the 2 week diet. Than followed the diet. The first 3 days are the worst. After surgery you won't feel hunger. You can do anything for 2 weeks.

A couple of suggestions that may help weening yourself into the a pre-op diet...

Start looking for a shake you like for your pre-op diet (your taste may change post-op, so don't over buy).

Incorporate 1 shake a day and start playing with different flavors and textures - this will help you post-op. (Adding sugar free puddings, low-glycemic fruits, sugar free syrups, etc.)

Practice mindful eating techniques now - taking smaller bites (I used appetizer forks and spoons); eat slower (I downloaded an app called Eat Slower and set it to one minute intervals); eat 1-2 meals without any distractions (no TV, magazines, books, etc. - allow yourself to be calm).

Start walking if you're not working out - being in better physical shape prior to surgery will help with the recovery process.

Doing all these things helped me feel like I was working towards something rather than dreading the inevitable two week pre-op diet.

The next three weeks are going to fly by!!!! Best of luck to you!

Honestly, this is so different than anything to do with dieting that you have ever done, and you can do it! There is a huge payoff and you can read about it here with all these success stories. Our doctor chided us that he didn't want to find part of a hamburger, LOL, in our stomachs during surgery. It was always on my mind that whatever I ate he would see it. Ridiculous I know!

Best of luck. I just wish I could have this surgery many years ago - it is such a dream come true. One minute at a time, one hour, one day! God Bless!

Here's how you get through it: unlike a regular diet, this one is only for a limited time. I'm not going to lie, its hard. But its only for so long, just keep that in mind.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
