Did anyone have an OPEN RNY? I have questions!

Recommended Posts

I am having my surgery on 1/15/14 and will be having my RNY open due to scar tissue and previous surgeries. I was just wondering if there is anyone out there who had their RNY open and how long did it take to get fully mobile and not so much pain? How long were you off work? How long was it before you could drive again? How long were you in the hospital? Was there anything you couldn't do because of the open surgery that someone else had to do for you? Anything else would be helpful because I am getting really anxious and nervous about the surgery. Thanks!

Hi, I had open gastric bypass May 22 and it went great. They removed my gallbladder at the same time but even with that I was out of surgery in about an hour - as opposed to the 3 hours laproscopic. I found the recovery went really well, not a lot of crazy pain, and what I had was controlled with pain meds. I was walking around 5 or 6 hours after surgery - SUPER slowly, but walking. I was in the hospital 2 nights and released on the 3rd day with just percocet, I think. Pain was well managed and I was completely off the pills after a week at home. I wasn't allowed to drive for 2 weeks but probably could have after 1. The binder they give you really helps, so keep it on and tight. I've healed really well I think. It took maybe 1 full month to be able to sleep comfortably on my back in bed but other than that everything was pretty good. I only work part time anyway but went back to my schedule after 3 weeks. Week 2 I went in a day here or there.

If you have any other specific questions please let me know - I'm happy to help!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
