Body fat, TEE, and goal weight

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm a VSG Vet. My surgery was May 17, 2011. I've been at goal since March 2012. As a Christmas present to myself, I had my body fat tested in a bodpod today. I'm 5'6" and weighed 135.8 in the undies and sports bra I wore for testing. My BMI is 21.8. Body fat is 38.7, higher than expected, but in the healthy range ( under 40% for women). My TEE total energy expenditure is 1342-1645 per day.

I'd like to get weighed on one of those scales that estimate body fat so I can compare it against the bodpod. The bodpod is very accurate and I'm wondering how the scale compares.

I am going to work on decreasing fat% by increasing my resistance training. I've been walking but I'm going to add some exercise classes and then get tested again later this year. I'd like to get under 30% body fat but I'm not sure how realistic that is for me.

You know, Lynda, it is hard for me to comprehend that with a BMI less than 22 at 135 your BF is that high! You are skinny!!!!

I was surprised too. But the bodpod is supposed to be very accurate.i do have some flabby spots, which I rack up to my previous weight and my age.

Very interesting and I think the part about calorie or energy expenditure is useful for you for maintenance. One thing though if you are happy with the way you feel and look and are in good health don't get too hung up on the numbers. Its really about your health and how you feel in your clothes.

Yes, but high body fat in normal BMI is correlated with a four-fold increase in cardiovascular disease: http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052748704762904575025313433081780

So I am thinking of dropping my weight another 5 pounds, which will put me at a 21BMI and attending a Pilates class for seniors. I'm 57 and have RA with joint damage.

Lynda, what is the article titled? When I click it takes to main page and I can't seem to find the correct article. Thanks! I am interested in this as I am at 22.4 BMI and 140 don't know BF but I'm 60 and need to figure it all out.

Hi Georgia, it's published Jan. 26 2010 in the HEART BEAT section of the Wall St. journal. Title is "The scales Can Lie: Hidden Fat" Subtitle is "New Study Argues Even Thin People Can Face Health Risks From Fat; It's 'Normal Weight Obesity'

I found it and it is very thought provoking! I'm going to see about getting BF tested and improving it this year too!!! Thanks for this. I'm going to post in Research and Statistics.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
