WLS & Thyroid desease

Recommended Posts

I am on .300mcg of Synthroid (used to be Levothyroxine but dr. switched to brand name to see if my thyroid levels improved...a little over a year ago). I do think my weight loss will be impacted by my Hashimotos. I had surgery on January 13th at 310lbs (lost 10lbs on the week of pre op liquids) and yesterday weighed 288. This time last week I weighed 296 which disappointed me. And this week I am not sure why the loss...cannot have anything to do with Protein or enough calories or physical activity because I am forcing myself to eat and, even so, it's minimal...perhaps the record cold temperatures and ice Water have inspired fat burning.

It's going to come off but it's not falling off. I remind myself that in this world of instant access and instant everything that it has taken me years to become morbidly obese and I will just take it as it comes. Whether it's 2lbs or 8lbs, it's better than where I was a month ago.

Perhaps SOMEDAY I won't need an elephant dose of thyroid hormones.

Losing slow is the best way. As long as you are loosing pounds or inches in your clothes you are winning the battle. Even no loss (no gain) is a cheering moment. Sometimes your body needs time to stabilize and adjust to the large amounts of weight loss. Hang in there. Great job.

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease (a form of hyperthyroidism) and Thyroid Eye Disease in 2001. Typically when you have a hyperactive thyroid all of your body's functions speed up. In my case it sped up my resting heart rate. 140 beats per minute was normal for me. So I was then put on metropolol to slow my heart and it worked. Many people who have this condition are very thin because of the sped up metabolism but I was one of the lucky few who this didn't happen to...that Nurse who told one of you that you should be thin um...perhaps you should give her some literature on the topic so she is better informed. I weighed 302 lbs! Even with such a high heart rate! Anyhow in 2008 my endocrinologist advised me to have radiation therapy to kill off a portion of my thyroid. He told me methimazole is not meant to be on for so long. He also told me it would be healthier for my body if my thyroid was under active...easier to treat as well. This of course is my individual case. So I had the radiation done and some of my symptoms went away. But my heart still won't slow down without medication. My eyes are still affected but not as bad. I am currently on 150mcg of Levothyroxine. I get my levels checked at least twice a year. As long as my thyroid is on point my weight loss is good. Only once did I start to gain and wondered "what the heck"...tests showed my thyroid levels were low so we adjusted my meds and the gain stopped. It will be interesting to see what affect further weight loss will have on my thyroid. Everyone's body is different...Amen!

Am having open rny on Jan 20 I have hypo thyroid. This makes losing weight really hard. Does anyone else have thyroid and can I still expect to lose regularly with only an occasional plateau?

I have hypothyroidism and have been on medication for 14 years. My surgery was 5/30/13. I lost weight steadily for seven months before I hit my first plateau at Christmas. I had hit 100 pounds lost by 12/23. My plateau (the only plateau I ever had) lasted almost two months. By the end of February I started losing again slowly (because there's not much left to lose).I've lost another 13 pounds since then. I'm five pounds away from what I weighed on my wedding day - 115lbs. :-)

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
