5 days post op and having drinking problems

Recommended Posts

Hello. Had my surgery on Saturday just gone and recovering well enough. Have stuck to Clear liquids and now introduced milk and yoghurt aftrt dr said I could from 3 days post op.

After around no more than 100mls of liquid being sipped slowly over say 30 minutes it feels very tight for the rest of the day. Not sure if this js what I am supposed to be feeling inside but thought I would ask on here. I can someyimes then grt a pain in my shoulder or neck similar to the sharp gas pain.

I have no restriction in my band. I know my body is healing right now but I have no idea how I'll be able to eat and keep up my Water in take. At the moment am really struggling to manage more than 2/300 cals a day and 500mls of liquids.< /p>

Any ideas? I've been really gentle with myself this week to make sure I heal properly.

Thanks

DP x

You are experiencing a lot of swelling and gas. They are probably both contributing to the tightness. If it were me, I'd probably go back to the clears again for another day then advance. The dr usually pits some primer saline in the band so you should have some and depending on your surgeon you may have more than others. Mainly, for now, stay hydrated. Sip, sip and sip some more.

I also think it is just the swelling and gas, I couldn't keep up with my fluids either and couldn't get very much down at all about 2 oz of broth .Just keep on getting as much down as possible and keep on working on figuring out what works best for you to get the gas to move. I would walk with a little bouncy movement (lol) sometimes, I was told about having someone doing little karate chops on my back too , that helped, or lay on my left side with a pillow pushing hard against the left side of my tummy . You just have to find what works to get it moving. I am 3 weeks out from surgery today and still having gas issues! Both ends , I Burp constantly, and I mean big ones, mostly after I eat or drink!

Good luck!

as the other posters said, the swelling (is giving you the feeling of restriction) and until it goes down, you need to take baby sips and keep on sipping.....some banders have restriction from the surgery alone and some claim not to...who knows maybe you will.....but you need to focus on healing, letting your body heal and get your mind in the game and let the band do its thing while you do yours...dont worry about calories or gaining or losing..its not about that right now..you didnt gain weight overnight and you wont lose it overnight.........congrats on the surgery and i am sure you will do fantastic

I'm three weeks out from surgery. I had the shoulder pains from the gas for two weeks. I also had a hard time getting in fluids. And for two weeks I really didn't eat that much. I say don't push it. You're not gonna die of starvation. I still don't eat that much. I'm embracing it. Make sure you drink enough to stay hydrated and you'll be ok.

Thanks so much for all your input, it's really reassuring. I am more concerned about not getting enough Water in. I've been adding electrolytes to the Water so I don't get dehydrated. I think I'll be cutting out the dairy from now on until I feel better. I def need to get someone to do karate chops on my back - love that idea. I def feel like I need my back clicking back into place. Am really hoping these gas pains go soon, its really uncomfortable :(

So looking forward to getting all healed up and being able to get back on track with my exercise regime and back to 'normal'....well as normal as you can be ;)

Thanks guys and have a great day

I know that everyone has given their opinions of what this is but you really should call your doctor. Just because people tell you what your feeling is swelling and it could be but you should talk to your doctor to make sure what you are feeling is normal.

You're still swollen and if you didn't have a preop diet, expect this feeling to last another week or so.

Check with your doctor to make sure all is well. A heating pad on my back helped with the gas and shoulder pains and gas-x strips help too. Popsicles saved me.

I dropped him an email last night. I have an appointment with him on Sunday, first one post-surgery. I do still think its the dairy, its been about 18 hours since I had any and the bloating feeling has gone. Just the usual neck pain. Love the idea of ice lollies/popsicles. Will go get some today I think. Have been making hot Water bottles all week, except the neck pain is right in my neck and collerbone. Its so awkward.

We're going out to the malls today so hopefully some walking around will help again!

Thanks guys xx

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
