2nd Band surgery and was wondering if your doctor ilnew the answer to my question

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone or anyone who can help me with my question.

I was banded in 2011 everything was great until July of 2014 NO restriction after an EDG, port replacement and still no restriction we had to remove and replace my entire band on 12/18/13.

My tube was crystalized and leaking. My do doctor said he had never seen this before only heard about one case of this in Las Vegas.

I feel like I need answers and not getting it from google or my physician.

Do you think you can ask your doctors why this happens? The band was good no erosion but the tube was??? Is it aspirin, alcohol? My PH in my body? To much acid? Am I eating wrong? Was I red the red zone for to long? PLEASE I don't want to do this again and would LOVE any feedback.

Thanks in advance! Going strong and wanting to do it right the second time around.

Highly unlikely this could happen again and nothing you did could have caused this. The tube and band are completely isolated from any fluids in your body.

You must have received a defective band or somehow the saline was defective or not saline for your fills?

i agree with 2much, that your body didn't do this. that the tubing was defective prior to being put in you. the tubing doesn't come in contact with food. it only acts as a conduit to get saline to your band. now i am not going to say that your body ph wasn't in play. i have a brother that cant' wear a watch because he shorts them out. so anything could be true. but i would think if your ph was involved your lapband would have been crystalized as well. i wish you success with this band.

Sorry, no answer from me. I never heard of this, if your own surgeon hasn't either, must be ultimately very rare. Hopefully, someone on here whose is in the medical field might have heard of this. Best wishes, Karen..aka..kll724

I don't mean to sound harsh, and I'm very sorry you've had all that trouble, but none of my doctors would ever agree to give medical advice to the online acquaintance of a person who's asking the question. Not only is doing that irresponsible, it's in violation of HIPAA regulations. My doctors won't even tell my medical information to my husband without having me sign a waiver authorizing them to do that.

So, me best advice to you is to talk to your own surgeon about this again - over and over again until your questions are answered. If you're still worried after that, you could try seeing another surgeon to get a second opinion.

I'm thinking someone must have injected some contaminated saline into your band? I doubt anyone will ever fess up to a mistake like this since you could sue the clinic if it could be proven.

Thank you everyone my doctor is VERY reputable and I highly doubt that the saline was bad.... I have watched every fill let along asked all the questions. How can saline be bad? It comes from a sterile vial with needles that are in its own sterile packaging. I think my body crystalized the tubing but the band was in prefect condition so that's where the confusion comes in for me.

I totally get the patient privacy I just wanted to reach out to the band world to see if anyone had heard of this.

I will be reaching and following up with allergen to see if it was defective or what they find.

please keep your comments coming I need closure and want this to be right the 2 nd time around.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
