newstart1216 0 Posted January 9, 2014 (edited) Hello Everyone, I am new to this group and I am looking forward to sharing and the support of others who have made the same life change choice as I did. My problem right now is that I am 23 Days post-op and I have no appetite for anything whatsoever and it is difficult to get my Protein in. I've already been back to the hospital once due to dehydration and I would prefer not having to go back. Does anyone have any suggestions? One problem with the New whey. Protein Shots is that I smelled it before I attempted to drink it and it never made it down my throat. Now I'm at a loss!! I can do the powder Protein shakes but I find them very sweet and I'm not too into sweets. I opted for the Laproscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass. WildGrits 101 Posted January 9, 2014 I totally agree with you about too much sweet. Have you found some unflavored Protein powder? You could add it to Soup or broth or coffee. The down side is it can't be too hot of the Protein gets all weird.
2biglamb 65 Posted January 9, 2014 When shopping for Protein we have to watch the sugar content. I had bought one that was so sweet turns out it had 26 gr of sugar per scoop! I now use one with max 5 grs of sugar and they are bland but at least I will get my protein. Good luck!!
GastricBypassNY 25 Posted January 9, 2014 I use powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chocolate or unflavored Protein. I used to use the chicken Soup flavored one but I got sick of it after having it daily for 6 months straight!
ajustice 484 Posted January 10, 2014 Hi and welcome! Ok so the thing with Protein..it's a process and it takes time to get it all together and eventually it will work. It's a learning curve so to speak. The most important part is making sure you stay hydrated and that's something sipping through out the day can help you with. Sometimes something as simple as an alarm on your phone to remind you until you get the sensations back in your new stomach. Also Protein can be a tricky thing when you are post op with the tastes and changes. Sometimes Vitamin Shoppe and GNC and other retailers will have sample packs if you can try it out may help before buying a bunch of stuff and is a gamble if you will like or tolerate it. When you refer to the whey shots are they the mini vials? Sometimes that is protein in a form that is truly not absorbed. A good rule of thumb is look at the content amount of protein. Your body can only absorb a bit over 40grams of protein at a time I believe. You can do this and we are all here to help you. Congrats on your surgery!! Let me know if I can help with anything. DLCoggin 1,788 Posted January 10, 2014 Every Protein shot that I've ever looked at with one exception - Yes Whey (not New Whey) - is made from collagen Protein. Collagen has a PDCAAS score of 0.08 which means it is virtually indigestible. All the protein in the world is useless if your body can't digest it. The Yes Whey nutrition label indicates that it is whey isolate which has a PDCAAS score of 1.00 - the highest possible indicating it is a highly digestible protein - http://www.luckyvitamin.com/p-435130-protica-nutritional-research-yes-whey-rtd-liquid-protein-shot-orange-29-oz . But, every protein shot that folks have commented on, including Yes Whey, reportedly taste awful (to put it mildly). Whey isolate is filtered to remove virtually all fat and what's left, although very high quality protein, is definitely not tasty. 1 ajustice reacted to this

WildGrits 101 Posted January 10, 2014 Do you have information on the other Protein options? Milk Protein isolate---Muscle Milk Milk Protein Concentrate---EAS Calcium Caseinate, Milk Protein Concentrate, Whey Protein Concentrate---Pure Protein Organic Sprouted Brown Rice Protein---Raw Protein And my fav---Proprietary non-GMO protein blend (rice protein, pea protein and soy [isolated soy protein and fermented soy])---Spirutien I thought all protein were created equal. Glad I'm learning before I spent a ton on post-surgery foods. 2 DLCoggin and ajustice reacted to this
ajustice 484 Posted January 10, 2014 I stick to the whey isolates. I have primarily used Unjury chocolate splendor and the body fortress brands.
