I remember a while ago coming on this forum and announcing to everyone that I had my first salad for supper with shrimp in it and that was my dinner...It seemed so unreal to me to do that since I was raised on a farm where food was a big part of life....

We had 2 different kinds of meat, several veggies, potatoes and a couple of Desserts...Fresh bread and lots to extras........

So i raised my kids the same way...Always had the 5 food groups in mind when I made a meal and almost always succeeded at it....

Now..fast forward 5 months since i mentioned my shrimp salad and now it is a habit almost...tonight I am having chicken and salad..And it seems normal to me.......I am looking forward to it and no longer see it as a big deal..It is just what I eat........

I hardly bake now and most of it goes in the freezer or hits the garbage can.........Boy I have changed so much since i was sleeved!!!!! This part...for the good I think!!! ;)

It is amazing what we considered "normal". The evening meal had to contain meat, potatoes, vegetables, and bread at our house. It also had to be followed up by dessert.

Then TV and Snacks.

Our new lack of capacity sure opened our eyes and shut our overworked jaws.

I have to say that I love it so much better...I look over my plate and try to make it look pretty and I enjoy each bite and my hubby eats the rest...But it is so natural now....And it wasn't until I thought about it on the way home from shopping that I realized I have been doing this now for a few months and it is no longer strange to me....

The first time it was huge and I couldn't believe I did it and it filled me up......Before I would have downed that so quick and been looking for more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is so much nicer!!!!!!!!!!

Growing up my skinny Mother made homemade biscuits and gravy every night, in addition to working 12 hour days. I really do not wonder why I have a weight problem. Nutrition was not one of my vocabulary words, but Mmmmmmm Good was something I knew well. What I am eating now no longer reminds me of my Mother or my childhood. I accept this graciously. I am also thankful to be sleeved.

Laughing at this because this week I realized I have to rethink how to use the microwave. I'm so used to reheating a large bowl of (whatever) that I almost destroyed the 1/3 of a meatball I was trying to have for lunch!

Unfortunately, my family was the same, and still is. It is VERY hard for me to live surrounded by people who still eat how I ate before the surgery. In my my family, it's always been those 5 groups of food like you mentioned. And I'm scared that they are a bad influence on me and that I will eventually get back into all the former bad habits I had. :-(

LOL, everything I heat is less than 60 seconds now. But at first I was exploding 1/2 cup of Soup, etc. Still learning!

Our new normal contains 5 of NOTHING, everything is a 1. Let it be yours Earthy! Do not let your family drag you back down. Who knows, you might inspire them! Best wishes!

Lol! I just got done having a chicken salad for dinner...and when I saw your post, I thought about it...it's definitely the first time I've had a salad for dinner..just salad..

It used to be salad was a Pre cursor to dinner. Or worse, it was a Pre cursor to an appetizer, dinner, and a dessert. My oh my!

Although I have found that I find it more beneficial if I just eat one veggie cut up for my salad. Lettuce is just a filler lol

Your description of meals before surgery sure sounds like mine. I loved to bake and did almost every day. And none of it went to waste, either. I would bake a zillion Christmas Cookies, so after Christmas was over I'd be sick of Cookies. I would then begin what I called "cake season"! That's because I baked one several times a week until spring.

That's just so terribly absurd. I don't miss that life at all. I almost never bake now, and I dont cook like I used to either. And when I do, everyone is now on the bariatric plan with me, lol!

If I eat salad it is mostly the guts too..i eat very little lettuce..Mostly cheese, bacon, pecans..you know the Protein bits...But I like to add a dense meat too to complete it.....LOL..It looks so funny on my plate..This little salad and I only get 1/2 of it down...love it!!!!!!!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
