I think it depends on your circumstances.

Last time when I had lost about 125lbs I talked to my Dr. and told him how much this hanging skin was bothering me. He did say that it could be removed by AHC because it was a quality of life thing. I am not sure if that would be a TT, but it would have been an apron removal.

I am going to see my Dr. and see what he thinks my options are once I loose the weight.

To echo Gaffer in Alberta I know a couple of ladies who had their TT's paid by provincial health care as was a quality of life issue. One girl stated that the extra weight she was carrying was hurting her back so they covered Lipo and TT.

MacDaddy

but yet I couldn't get them to cover my band. maybe I should get lipo and band....

i saw a plastic surgeon 2 weeks ago..it's not good news about OHIP paying for anyting..the doc showed me pics of people with their bellies hanging near their knees that were denied by the plan!!?Anyways i left and decide that i will apply for medical credit and do it myself...

When i called the ministry of health they said the doctor must submit the recommendation.

:faint:

I know someone who had it paid for by OHIP.....the doc recommended her and OHIP approved it because she had a bad skin rash underneath where all the skin hung.....in fact, I know she didn't treat it on purpose so it would look worse etc when she was examined.

Short answer: if you need it done for a medical reason (vice cosmetic), it will be covered.

Like everyone else said, the only chance of getting it covered is if it's causing problems, like Yoda said, with things like rashes.

There's a difference between a tummy tuck/abdominoplasty and a panniculectomy, and I think most government funded ones are panniculectomies... the difference is that with the Tummy Tuck they remove skin, fat AND tighten the muscles, but the panniculectomy only removes the skin. The tight muscles, (I imagine) make things look alot better, and I guess that's why they wouldn't pay for a tummy tuck, per se.. cause that would be considered cosmetic.

Prices are gonna vary all over.... look up some clinics and contact and see if they could give you a rough quote to how much they'd expect it to cost.

OHIP won't pay for a full TT but they will pay for a panni which is the removal of excess skin. You can upgrade and pay for the muscle tightening that the panni doesn't include with most plastic surgeons. From what my surgeon told me you need to have documentary evidence in ON of rashes or other medical conditions that directly impact on your quality of life and this includes up to having daily visits by a home care nurse to take care of the issues.

I paid 10 500 for my TT and Breast life/reduction and I can't say enough about having a flat tummy and perky boobs.

just curious...

does anybody think there would be a quality difference of having one done in hospital vs. a plastic surgeon? maybe the one paid out of pocket will be done 'prettier'?

I don't think there is a difference, having met several PS's over the years they are all perfectionists. They don't care where they do the surgery they just want it to look right. Sometimes it is a little frustrating when they are evaluating your body pre and post op with some of the comments they make and don't think about.

I have a friend who had a panni with a non plastic surgeon just two general surgeons did it, they were thinking of doing more panni's and simple things like that and she was their first one and her scar looks pretty good. A little thicker than mine but if I had hers I wouldn't be unhappy.

My key is like your PS, make sure they have experience in dealing with patients who have lost a lot of weight since our skin reacts very differntly and you want someone who is familar with the band.

I believe OHIP will pay for some patients, but I don't believe all surgeons work for OHIP jobs. When I asked about the plastic surgeon where I got my band (Dr. Lista), they told me they do not use OHIP, period. So, then I'm wondering if you get less qualified or cosmetically qualified surgeons if you go the OHIP way????

maybe they're just considered 'reconstructive' rather than cosmetic? Perhaps the people that do the OHIP jobs are even better because they truly want sexy bods for all, not just the wealthy, and they're not just in it for money?! hmmm...

No, I'm not totally serious.... I'm sure there are good and bad OHIP and private plastic surgeons! Just throwin' the idea out there :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
