My insurance required that I have five years of documented morbid obesity. So I had to scramble and find any and every doc I might have seen in five yrs that may have gotten a weight for me. They also required that I lose 25lbs. I went to my pcp for help with that. She put me on Qsymia which is a very expensive diet pill. I paid the money though because I needed help so badly. I ended up losing the 25lb and she documented it all. She was all for it though from day one. However, she did talk more about the bypass but that's just not the way I wanted to go. Good luck! And go to a seminar it's one of the first steps for sure

I definitely agree. I am very lucky and my PCP is very open to whatever I tell her. I have a lot of health problems and I know when I want checked out by certain people and certain things I want/need done. Like I have had two thumb surgeries. I just told her, hey I need to see a hand surgeon. Also I have terrible GERD, I just tell her, hey it's acting very horribly, maybe I need to have a scope. I doubt most PCP's would think it strange if you are large enough for the surgery that you bring it up and ask to be referred. They should be looking out for your health. And part of their job is to refer you when needed. I would just ask. You should never be reluctant to talk to your PCP about health problems you would like to take care of. That is what they are there for. :-) Hope it goes well!

Your docs job is to educate you and do what they can to keep you physically and emotionally healthy. They are not there to judge you or impose their moral standards on you. If they are, LEAVE!!! I've worked with some docs I thought were wonderful fabulous people but then treated their obese patients like they were less than human (this while thePA at they're side was 300 + pounds). I've also worked with real ass hole docs who judged everyone. But MOST have simply wanted the best for their patients.

Like you mentioned, it's a lengthy process... If I were you I'd get the ball rollin at my first appointment with my pcp. Congratulations for taking a stand for your health! Best wishes

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
