Any chance your questions are of a nature that someone aside from a black man could answer? Plenty of people here willing to help...

I'm a black woman. I'm not banded yet, however, I check various websites. You may want to try www.obesityhelp.com to chat with other black men. Obesity Help has a forum called Black America Forum.

Hope this helps.

Ummm, I am not trying to be rude but I do not see what being black may have to do with questions you have. Almost all of us here are just like you, other than skin color. We all have questions about surgery, weight, ect....color is irrelevant in our weight. I am not fat because I am white.... :girl_hug: Sorry to be like that, but I don't want you to overlook friends because of skin color....

Hi Agoody, Welcome to LBT. I am not male or of African American descent, actually I am female of Hungarian Jewish descent and born in Australia.:girl_hug:

I understand that coming from an African American background and being a male you would have your own unique life experience. Having said that there are lots of people here that would like to give you support and advice.

Keep in mind that most people who are banded are women too.

All the best.

Susannah

This is a late response but....

I understand this man's concern for wanting support from other black men. He may be from a family or community where certain foods and customs lend themselves to a heftier lifestyle. While the African -American community is certainly not extremely different from others in our world, fat acceptance and food preferences for African-Americans don't always go hand in hand with the lapband lifestyle.

Ladies, give the man a break...

It's ok Agoody. I am an AA female and I know what it is like to tell your family and friends that you are going to have surgery. They think you are crazy. Many people in don't understand that in our community, weight loss surgery is not accepted. It is frowned upon. Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions.

You pulled up a thread that's nearly a year old, and nearly half a year out from any activity, and are telling people to give OP a break. That's actually endearing. :tongue2:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
