I miss my fruit!

When did you start eating fruits again? I'm six weeks post op and craving oranges like nobody's business! I just want to suck the juice out of the skin!!

I got fruits with no skin in their own juice at 4 weeks, and skinned fruits at 8 weeks. I don't get citrus until 3 months. It seems every doctor has a different post-op diet. Check with your doctor or nutritionist to see when you are allowed to have them.

I am missing clementines a lot.

I am almost 7 weeks out now on solids, all food as tolerated. I am still nervous to eat fresh fruit the way I did in the past though.

Crazy to read this, I haven't even been sleeved yet but my nut has already told me that once sleeved I won't be allowed fruit for six months Bc of the sugar content. My entire diet seems so much more strict than everyone else's (no mashed potatoes or potato Soup, cream of wheat, etc after surgery). I'm definitely getting my fill of fruits now, preop. Lol

Once I am back to solids I will be allowed 2 tbs of fruit. The skin from citrus might not be the greatest. I am allowed to peel the skins though. Good luck!

By week 4, I was eating plain yoghurt and frozen blueberries. Well chewed, of course.

I'm 16 weeks out and I eat all fruits. I know its high in sugar, but it has essential nutrients.

I know everyones plan is different - but I can't see how any fruit can be considered 'bad', if eaten in sensible quantities.

As I have said before, if someone had told me that I wouldn't have been able to eat fresh fruit after this surgery? I'dve not had the surgery. Fact.

You could try fruit infused Water. It's not the same but it will give you the essences of fruit while helping you get to your Water goals :-) there are tons of different flavor combinations you can try or just make it up. Right now I'm drinking orange raspberry and it's sooooo good!

Also everyone's diets are different. I had unsweetened apple sauce as part of my purred staged and we could have softer fruits (without seeds!) during soft foods.

fruit lover here. And hater of most things dairy. I could live on just fruit. Post sleeve fruit is out and dairy is in. I'm going to do what I'm told and eat dairy and avoid fruit initially.

I keep reading that all foods will be possible eventually. I'm holding out for when this becomes my reality.

Hang in there. Imagine being slim, on a beach eating a mango. It's worth the wait.

Other than the 'sugar content' (and unless you have diabetes and other sugar related problems), did your nutritionist give you any more reasons as to why fruit was 'off limits' to you?

She just told me a list of "no-no's" for the first six months and said in my final meeting with the PA well go over my pre and post op diets. At this point she said "our diets may be different than what your sister's was ( she knows my sis had the surgery, but used a different surgeon) for instance, we don't allow any potatoes or fruit during the first six months. Not even potato Soup or mashed potatoes on any stage". I honestly didn't think to ask because I figured on this next appt to finalize everything it would be explained in greater detail.

In all honesty, I think it's crazy. Hopefully I misunderstood and she said "fruit juices", but I'm fairly certain she said fruits. If this is the case, I'll practically be in ketosis the entire six months if Protein and veggies (except corn, peas, carrots and potatoes) are all I'll be eating.

Well, sounds like they're going for the zero carbs, zero sugars, zero fats option to maximise the loss in the first 6 months.

I know every nutritionist is different, but mine said 'we want you to eat low fat, low carb and low sugar - it doesn't mean you eliminate them entirely. The body needs them to function.'

He clarified it with 'obviously, we want you to get a bit of carbs from your veggies - not white processed flour and your sugars? EAT your fruit, don't drink it, but limit it to a very small amount. You need to be able to enjoy and embrace a healthy balanced diet for the long-term'.

If this is about maximising weight loss and not about any other sugar related issues - I, personally, would not see the harm in having 10 blueberries in some yoghurt once a week.. or something similar, when you're cleared to eat mushies. I am of the opinion, that if you deprive yourself of everything, you're going to re-bound somewhere along the line and it might not be pretty. I know people consistently say 'Change everything now, get in good habits for the future'... yadaa yadaa yadaa... But a tiny amount of fruit is NOT a bad habit. Chowing down on sliders like chocolate, chips, sweets and the like, is.

As I have stated - I have eaten fruit (admittedly, not citrus because of the stomach acid issues), and my weightloss is going just fine. I feel healthy and full of vitality, too. I don't know whether that would have been the case if I'd have been warned off everything...

Its your body - you know what is right for it. Best of luck :)

The good news is the current best research is working its way into NUT's and surgeon recommendations. Dr. Atkin's was controversial......30 years ago...... there is no controversy we now know that carbs stimulate insulin response which stimulates fat storage. fruit has enough carbohydrates that for some this is a problem. If you can tolerate fruit fantastic for you.

That said, if you do not have diabetic issues whatever long-term solution you can live with forever is what is needed for you. For me staying in ketosis is a requirement. Fruit except in extreme moderation will never be on my daily menu of what I eat.

I'm able to eat all kinds of raw fruit (apples believe it or not are my fav now) but again as previously stated all surgeons differ. It takes hours to finish but it goes down smooth.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
