Calories & Exercise

Recommended Posts

Just curious. When I am told that I should have 1200 calories a day. If I am exercising, for example burn 300 calories, can I eat 300 additional calories(1500), to get me back to 1200 calories? I am 6.5 months out and now I eat 1200 calories and do not eat more if I exercise.

I personally would not eat more but others do. If you are still losing and it isn't affecting you negatively then I would continue as you are. :)

From the FAQ in MFP:

" Calories Consumed (Food) - Calories Burned (Exercise) = Net Calories This means that if you exercise, you will be able to eat more for that day. For example, if your Net Calorie goal is 2000 calories, one way to meet that goal is to eat 2,500 calories of food, but then burn 500 calories through exercise. Think of your Net Calories like a daily budget of calories to spend. You spend them by eating, and you earn more calories to eat by exercising. We do not recommend that any member consume fewer than 1200 net calories on any given day."

That said, I consumed fewer than 1200 net calories per day for the first year after surgery and I am just fine :-) I had enough fat to burn and see me through. Now that I am learning to maintain, I am trying to manage my net calories better.

So if i burn 400 through exercising, I should then increase my calorie intake to 1600 for that day to get my minimum of 1200.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
