Food Addiction

Recommended Posts

Lessons learned Doddie. I am becoming increasing more aware of what triggers me to eat. Last night I had a frustrating incident with my daughter and all I could think about after was eating a big bowl of ice cream! I was bugged that there was none in the house and sent my husband out to get some!!! It really felt like I could not control/deal with my anger/frustration with her without the ice cream. Sick, sick sick!

Susansilver hi: I have total empathy with you on the solace one gets from food but if it wasn't for the band, I probably would not have stopped and got back to counting calories. I see you are to be banded in May and I know without a doubt you will never look back once you have the band.

Yes Doddie - my commitment to this is complete. Not only do I want the band to take off this weight and keep it off, but I will also work on my food adddiction so that I am not ever in this position again!

Good for you susansilver. Like all of us, you will go thru ups and downs, but you are and will not be alone. I found that before the band, I felt I was the only overweight person in the world. Recently the newspapers have been downright mean in their articles about obesity. Words like eat less and exercise more will solve their weight problems. Tax the hell out of them and make them loose weight. Why would they need medical support when their over eating is their own fault. On and on they go to the point I was becoming very depressed when I accidently heard about the band. The rest is history. I found a whole new world of people with similar issues to me and they are more than willing to help when I get down. Agian welcome to our group. Doddie

You know, I get very frustrated when it comes to what insurances will and won't pay for. Mine won't pay for weight loss drugs, gym memborships or counseling sessions to help me lose weight but they will pay for surgery. This doesn't seem right to me. Doesn't it make more sense to help a person try to lose weight before they become morbidly obese rather than weight until the problem is out of control?

Without a doubt. An ounce of prevention is better than an pound of cure. For some reason, the vast body of medical people, insurers, and politicians, etc. can't get it thru their thick skulls that morbid obesity is more than overeating. It is a disease. For some reason they recognize anorexia but not the other end of the spectrum. I went private for my band and I will be paying for it for a long time, but I think often of the souls out there that can't afford the surgery. I would be more than willing to pay more taxes if the authorities would put the band on their list of coverage so medical services could help us. But they won't because overweight people in their minds are responsible for their weight problems. Sad Doddie

Oh Doddie - you are so right. The Ontario Ministry of Health has no clue what they are doing! Recently at SickKids Hospital in Toronto the Paediatrician in Chief who also happens to be an endocrinologist has announced the opening of a centre for obesity. It will encompass many disciplines including nutition, social work, exercise science and even bariatric surgery! Remember this is for children - now that is progressive. We have all seen or heard of morbidly obese children and it is truly sad. I am glad that they are including this option as well. I am sure that it would be the last resort, but there are children who need - no deserve this last resort.

The more posts I read on this forum, the better I feel about making the decision to have the surgery done. Cloe, your comments really hit home with me. Like you, I have 3 kids at home (age 5, 3, and 2). Over the past few years I have lost my identity. I have focused more on them and what they are eating and have allowed myself to just pile on the the weight. I told myself that this was my year. I was going to put myself at the top of the list with my family and I am starting to do that. The best part about it is that I am starting to feel better about myself and I haven't even had the surgery or lost any weight yet! It is amazing how positive thinking can really help you figure out what you want out of life. I want to be healthy, I want to play with my kids in the yard and get on a roller coaster without worrying that I am too big. I can't wait till that day comes for me!

WTG!!! If you can master this when your kids are young, and you are young (27!), That is fantastic!!!!!! I wish that I knew about the band at 27. But alas, never look back.

Thanks Chloe! I may only be 27, but all I can think about is all the years that have gone by that I didn't know about this surgery. I am a bit worried about the insurance process I am going through right now. My concern is that the way my insurance words it, unless you have some co-morbidities, they want you to have gastric bypass instead of lapband. Though I think both are great surgeries, I am really personally leaning towards the lapband. I guess time will tell. Has anyone else had the lapband payed for by insurance that didn't have any other co-morbidities?

It is so unfortunate that the media choses to only scratch the surface on the issues that face obese people like me. It's such a complex problem and I don't think that I have ever seen a compassionate, well researched article on this issue. So many of us are made to feel guilty and humiliated by people who read these articles and believe that our only problem is that we eat too much. Reading all of your posts is like reading my own story and I thank you for once again helping me realize that I am not alone!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
