Heartburn

Recommended Posts

Help! Does anyone else have this problem? I have been getting heartburn a lot lately-mostly in the afternoon. Sorry about the details here, but also having lots of gas. Gax-X doesn't help at all. I just had a fill recently but I've been doing well with that. I've been able to eat most things ok (even a small piece of banana bread) but I'm feeling a little restriction in the mornings. Does anyone else have this problem? The heartburn is starting to annoy me!

Heartburn after a fill is generally a sign that you may be too tight. If this is something new since the fill, I'd consult my physician.

You may need just a tiny bit removed.

In the meantime, you may want to put something under the head of your bed to lift the mattress. Try not eating anything at least 3-4 hrs before lying down and make sure to drink Water to rinse all the food out of your pouch before bedtime.

Too tight fills/reflux can sometimes lend themselves to slippage of the band or aspiration pneumonia. Two things you definitely do not want.

Let us know what you find out.

Heidi, please follow up on this. Like Leatha said, this can lead to serious problems. You don't want to end up in the ER on a weekend. Those ER Drs. are generally not familiar w/ a band. Best of luck to you!:D

I don't have very bad heartburn, but I do have it occasionally. I can't believe I could be overfilled. I feel that I can eat a LOT compared to what I hear others are eating. Does it always mean you are overfilled?

Nope, but if it's something that comes on directly after a fill. I'd be suspicious of it. Or, if you're waking up in the night with aspiration. This is deadly serious business.

Much better now! I haven't had any problems the past few days with heartburn. I was experimenting with eating some bready type things and it wasn't making me feel good- so I stopped that! Thanks for the words of wisdom.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
