How long before you could eat salad?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon says 6 months but I haven't had an ounce of trouble and I'm wondering if I really need to wait that long. Im at the end of my 10th week. Thanks

It depends on your doctor and nutritionist. I was allowed salads and pretty much any solid food at 6 weeks. My 6 week check up was 12.26.13. I've had two salads since then and no problems. My nutritionist said just to make sure my salad had a lot of Protein on it such as meat, egg and cheese. She did say that raw vegetables take up a lot of room in our new tummies so be sure to get your Protein first.

My surgeon said six months too. If you want permission to deviate from what your surgeon told you, in my opinion, you should ask your surgeon. I got permission a couple of times to change my instructions, when I brought it up with the dietician and explained what I wanted and why. But I wouldn't go against my instructions just because I wanted to or because people on the internet said their instructions were different, etc.

My NP told me to just eat the topping when I asked about salads. She said to focus on the Protein and the tasty crunchy tidbits like peppers, onions, seeds, etc. and dressing because that's probably what I wanted. (Really. Who WANTS lettuce?)

She was right. I was four months out, it was a Panera chopped salad and I ate maybe half of the half size. Yummmo!

I wasn't able to eat salad for the 1st six months, not because of any dieting restrictions, but because Frankensleeve would not tolerate anything that fibrous. When you do try lettuce again, be sure and eat only a small bite to see how your new tummy accepts it.

So true! It's always important to see how your new tummy reacts to the introduction of new foods. Of the two salads I've had, I never finished both - I ate the Proteins and a little but of the lettuce - just enough to get the crunchy and dressing taste.

Vegetables, especially raw, take up a lot of room and, depending on how fibrous they are, they may or may not agree with your tummy. I love roasted carrots and have a great recipe that my husband loves. I tried them over the holidays and they were ok, but I only had a couple. I tried them again this week and had a few more - yuck - my tummy did not like them and I had my first case of throwing up. I will not be having carrots again, period.

Go slow and choose wisely.

s.

I ate salad day one of full solids (post-op week 5). It was Christmas Day, in which I ate turkey with a bit of gravy first and then a very small bit of mixed greens with a vinegret. It was fine. I haven't had much in terms of broccoli or other fresh Veg's as I still have trouble getting my protien in.

I agree with the comments about testing. Try a small amount. I am however not saying to go against explicit doctors recommendations, just to use common sense...whatever that is LOL

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
