ElliottWasHere 41 Posted January 4, 2014 I had been a vegetarian for 3 years, then I stopped for 3 years..now I feel like it's time to return to a vegetarian diet. however, my nutritionist strongly advised me not to go vegetarian until the summer. she said i need to get in a lot of Protein once i'm sleeved and it'd be harder as a vegetarian. I'm at the point where just looking at meat makes me want to throw up. I'll grill some chicken and stare at it wondering how the hell am i going to eat this. anyone else have this problem? 2 loseitall6289 and Dani.o.dani reacted to this

Dani.o.dani 67 Posted January 4, 2014 Hi! My NUT thought I was crazy for wanting to become a vegetarian post op. I pressed her for info and she recommended unflavored soy Protein powder in everything. GNC sells it. She also said Beans, Beans, beans. I'm not into eating dairy (I think that I may be lactose intolerant), eggs, pork or much beef. I can eat some chicken and fish sometimes, but I feel sick when I eat many animal Proteins. I also got kidney stones and don't want to overload my kidneys with animal Proteins and Calcium. Soy does contain estrogens so that's something that you need to keep in mind. Testosterone is created from cholesterol (and other fats) in the middle of the night. If you want to keep up your free testosterone levels eat a Brazil nut six times a day (according to Tim Ferriss in the six hour body). I asked my NUT about this and she agrees. I think that getting off grains (refined carbs especially) is the number one thing that is helping me lose weight. Not having my body constantly feeding me hunger signals what I'm most looking forward to post-op. Good luck on your journey. 1 ElliottWasHere reacted to this

I can only stomach small portions of boneless chicken but i feel like crap after eating it. i'm also not friends with dairy but almond milk has been a big help. I wish you nothing but success on your journey =] 1 Dani.o.dani reacted to this
Alyson810 10 Posted January 6, 2014 Try nuts. Almonds and dried edamame are daily staples in my diet. I also drink Kefir yogurt p. it has lots of Protein. 1 ElyQuint reacted to this
ElyQuint 446 Posted January 6, 2014 I am a pre & post op vegetarian down 69 pounds in five months. I will admit that veganism might not be entirely do-able but as an ovo-lacto veggie I have no problems meeting my numbers daily with shakes, tofu, cottage cheese, nuts, seeds, soy, yogurt and seitan. I'm not really allowed Beans, quinoa or chickpeas which were a source of Protein prior too surgery. Nobody is gonna fault you for eating tofu in place of chicken as long as you meet your numbers. 2 ElliottWasHere and Dani.o.dani reacted to this

KristinaRnY 455 Posted February 11, 2014 (edited) Im a vegetarian and my nut encouraged me being a vegetarian!!! There's a lot of other ways you can get Protein in not eating meat!! She also told me that people are often forced to become vegetarians post op because they cannot tolerate meat. There's no way in hell I'm eating meat lol pre op, post op, no op lol no meat! NMJG 1,266 Posted February 11, 2014 It is very hard to be 100% vegan or vegetarian during the first 6 months of the sleeve. I could not do it and get in enough Protein, however it is becoming easier the further out I am. I always include non-meat Proteins, but I did have to have at least one meat/fish or whey or dairy item every day to meet Protein minimums. Vegan protein ideas: Amazing Meals protein powders - hemp protein and pea protein Nutiva Hemp Protein powder (unflavored) Lots of Beans lol. Edamame, black Beans, lentils, split peas, northern white beans, garbanzos, Nuts (peanuts, almonds, pistachios), nut butters Soy products (tofu, seitan, tempeh, TVP, soy cheese). There is soy Protein Powder but I don't care for it. Other: green peas, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, quinoa, chia seeds I also purchased a number of Low Carb products from Netrition (flour, baking mix, flat bread, bagels) that have very high protein and low carbs. You might take a look and see if anything appeals to you.
KristinaRnY 455 Posted February 12, 2014 I can see it being hard if you are vegan but not vegetarian. Unless you are a "junk food" vegetarian and don't know how to prepare high Protein meals or if you are a picky eater.

B-52 7,113 Posted February 12, 2014 Ok, I'm going to say it....I work with NUTs...they are called in to be part of the team on certain cases...1/2 of them have absolutely no common sense...!!!! They go by the book to a "T" even though the patient is blowing up like a balloon right in front of them... I keep my mouth shut, but I read posts here everyday where NUTS tell people the darnedest things.... But then, they work for your Dr. so you have to listen to them.... Three months after surgery I got into it with the NUTS at my Dr.'s office....let's just say we came to an understanding....and yet today they all rave about my success....(in spite of them) Ok, sorry.....just had a moment there....back to normal programming... 3 naenaern777, KristinaRnY and catfish87 reacted to this
