So, I am 15 days out and I feel hungry all the time. ALL THE TIME. This is not head hunger, I swear. It is physical hunger. But I read somewhere (on here maybe?) that sometimes acid feels like hunger. I'm on a prescription antacids that I take once a day so not sure if that is the culprit. Is there any way to distinguish between the two?

I'm getting all my liquids in and my Vitamins and 50ish grams of protien from shakes.

Lots of people on here need to change antacid meds or take them twice Per day. I have GERD and nothing worked for me except protonix, which I take twice daily and am hoping works just as well after my surgery. April

I agree. For me Prilosec didn't work but Pepcid AC did, 40mg twice a day. We're all different and there are plenty available.

Protonix worked for me when Prilosec and Pepcid didn't. I also think it got better when I started waiting at least 45 mins after eating to drink rather than the 30 minutes I was told to wait.

Oh, and acid was never a problem pre-op. Never had any issues like that.

your tummy doesn't work like it did preop. I'd try it

But how do I know it's acid not hunger?

Hunger shouldn't be sharp and painful more like empty and rumbling. Also do the pains increase following a meal when you shouldn't be hungry? That's another sign its acid.

But how do I know it's acid not hunger?

Acid will burn all the way up to your throat and you will not be able to bare it after a couple of minutes.

May I ask if you have identified the cause of your GERD? Mine is due to a Hiatal Hernia and the surgeon is going to fix that with a stitch while doing the sleeve. Seriously hoping it will help me get rid of my ppi medication once and for all as it has been the cause of stomach polyps (discovered during endoscopy pre-op) and also insomnia!

my doctor and surgeon both told me it was "probably" due to a hernia, but my surgeon hasn't done my EGD. Like you, I'm hoping a hernia repair will take care of it. Since taking protonix twice a day I haven't had any issues. I've been on it for an entire year so far. It would be great to be off of it. Or even go down to once daily. If I skip a day, the following night I'll be choking on acid. It's awful.

Yeah i have the same issues - only diff is I've bin taking medication twice daily for my acidity for the last 10-15 yrs and it's beginning to take its toll now!

Anybody here with similar symptoms where after HH repair they didn't need to continue medication anymore?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
