Pre-op protein shakes question

Recommended Posts

So my powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein shake mixes came today and I'm starting pre-op diet Sunday.

Unjury instructions state to add some type of milk (skim, soy) but my instructions from Dr. Ortiz don't say anything about allowing or disallowing milk. Because I'm doing this on a weekend, I can't contact them directly.

I'm vegetarian so I'd be adding almond milk...is this allowed? You don't mix these things with Water do you?

I think mixing it with almond milk would be fine. The little card that came with mine recommended using milk with some of the recipes. I would email Dr. Ortiz because some doctors check their email over the weekend. Also if he is connected to a hospital they may have an answering service that will connect you to an on call doctor.

I haven't used that brand of Protein, but I highly recommend following the instructions for how to prepare the drinks. Trust me, it won't taste good at all if you substitute Water for milk! The purpose of the pre-surgery diet is to shrink your liver and use up the glycogen that is stored there. The calorie restriction is the most important thing, so long as you are reducing your calorie intake you should be fine.

I would prepare the shakes as directed for the weekend and follow up w/ your doctor on Monday to ensure you are following the diet they need you to follow to prepare for surgery.

I hope this helps! Good luck and congratulations on taking this next step on your journey to a healthy life!

I know I most likely will not be able to have milk after surgery so I bought sample packets of unjury and I tried the strawberry Sorbet with Water. It was terrible! Blah. I finished it but it would have been 100% better with milk instead of Water. I have milk issues (even though that rarely stops me right now) so thanks for the almond milk idea :) All the best to you.

p.s. I was just testing the shake for now, hopefully I will be doing the real liquid diet in January.

I'm mixing with Lactose free milk right now and they're very good. chocolate is good and vanilla is a close second.

BeeLee37- let me know about the strawberry ones once you mix with non-Water. :)

I read somewhere on the board that it wasn't as good as the other flavors so I didn't order any.

I just wanted to update you on the shakes- I have been drinking the Unjury with unsweetened almond milk and it is so good. I used my second packet of strawberry with the almond milk and it was delicious. My jar of plain, chocolate Splendor and the chewable vitamins came today. I want a jar of vanilla now too.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
