First fill since being banded 11-22-13

Recommended Posts

Just got my first fill today. Everything went well. But for some reason I'm getting this pain in my shoulder. Something like what our gas pain is like after surgery. My question is, has anyone else experienced this?

yes. i don't know how your doctor does a fill but my doctor has me raise my head , hold in my stomach muscles and lift my leg off the table about a inch. lol i hurt a lot after the fill with different muscles. the other thing it could be is the vagus nerve. it runs right through the area of the band. it is actually called the pneumogastric nerve. pneumo is chest area and gastric of course is your abdoman. it could be irritated. put a heating pad on it and it should be better soon. if it makes you feel more comfortable call your doctor office just to let them know of your chest hurting. any advice from us should be followed with call your surgeon just to be sure. we are not medical ppl. lol feel better soon

Thank you so much. That helped alil and made me feel more at ease. I did call my doctor, just waiting for him to call me back because he's not in his office.

I had my first fill today after my Dec 18 surgery. I am sore at the stent area and some in my back, but not really bad. It was a painful but not unbearable experience. Good thing, as I will be doing this many more times in my life! Now back to liquids only for 48 hours. Doctor said I can eat any foods I want to now with of course the limitations that go along with the Band.I am about 3 weeks post surgery and have done fine with very small amounts of shrimp cocktail and grilled chicken chewed many many times. So far, so good. The doctor said I am doing well and I am about 20 pounds down from the first day of pre-op shakes. This is my first time responding to anything but I have been reading and benefitting from these forums for several weeks.

So..how much do they put in the band the first time? And what is the green zone? I feel like these are dumb questions, just havnt had to deal yet with it..so I dont know. New questions. Anyone have any feed back?

Well congratulations. Wow there taking alil longer then usual for ur first fill. I guess just like me, I would say. At first I was scared, the first time then I didn't get it. But the second attempt I was more excited to finally get this thing going. So I feel you on that. It just normally depends on how much ur doctor puts in ur band while in surgery. Mine put 3cc so my first fill they just out another 1cc. There's another lady on here she started off I believe it was at 1.5cc and filled to 2cc. Don't worry about dumb questions, the only dumb question is the one not asked. The green zone which was explained to me was you eat meal in about 20-30 minutes and stop there or if your full before then. The point of the green zone is to be full for a good 4-5 hours or so without being hungry. Now you should be getting full at or around 1/2-3/4 cups of food. Hopefully this makes sense.

Right now they say that Im wide open.(meaning my band is not tightened) And I can tell..I dont get full as quickly as they say I would. So Im hoping that after my fill Ill start feeling that fuller sooner. So your saying after my fill I should only be eatting and full after eatting 1/2-3/4 cup AFTER my Fill? Cause right now..its not that way...Thank you for the support and answering my questions.

You might have some Fluid in there but of course not enough. Not exactly right after your fill. That's the point where we're trying to get too. It may take a few fills to reach that. But if course people have different experiences with that.

Hi there and congratulations on your surgery. I was banded 11/5 so we are a month apart. I'm sure it's different for different doctors, but this is what my first fill was like. The doctor asked a few questions about my appetite. He describes the goal as a tennis ball size portion of food being enough and then not hungry again for four to five hours. I had no Fluid in my band at surgery. He had me lay back on the table with my arms over my head. He located the port, marked it, cleaned the area and announced a "pinch" which was an anesthetic. Before I knew it he was offering me an arm to sit up, I couldn't believe how quick and easy it was. Now I have had four fills. Easy-peasy. A d now a free the last one I'm feeling it -- the lack of appetite, a slight tightness, disinterest in food (what!?). I experienced some of this post op when I was swollen and recovering. It's a great feeling to have the appetite monster off my back. For some people a fill isn't needed (though I'm told that is very unusual but some have primed bands or Plication); other people need several fills. The surgeon does not share the amount with me as it's different for every one and I guess he doesn't want me obsessing over that. Like every one says, it's different for every one. You will get there!

That happened to me on my first fill also. So today when I got my second fill it happened again but much less than the first fill so I asked the np and she said that I was the first person that mentioned that after a fill. She said that everybody reacts different and stated if you feel chest discomfort or gurgling after you sip Water than your band is too tight. If that's the case you have to get some removed. I had to do that on my first fill. ????

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
