When can I eat these foods + puree questions

Recommended Posts

So I have my list from the doc, but it is far from a comprehensive list. I have some food that I want to add in and I need to know when. Here they are:

Avocado

Shell fish

cheese (low fat, of course)

Mushrooms (if I grill a portobello is it a soft food? )

Dark chocolate

Now, don't get all up in arms about the chocolate. I'm talking very dark (very little sugar), 1 oz or less, on very rare occasions. Sweets have never really been a problem for me, but I do like the occasional piece of dark chocolate. My problem are portions and butter.

Also, I start purees in a few days (thank heaven) and I had a few questions:

My list says canned fish. Do you still wizz this or do you eat it as is since it's already kind of mushy?

Do you wizz things like eggs and cottage cheese?

Is this the phase where everyone raves about the Wendy's chili? Do you puree that too?

Is this where you stop mixing food and drink?

Thanks for the help!

So ... ye old puree stage. Basically, anything you can whip into a baby poop consistency is open game. My go-to meals were Soups. Turkey chili with veggies and smoked ham with lentils and veggies were my favorites. As I progressed, I pureed them less and less. I also ate tuna whipped up with ranch dressing. I would put this on a small square of sharp cheddar cheese. eggs caused me problems after one bite, so, I have one occasionally now, but, not too much. You will have to experiment.

So, grab the foods you like, add some broth and puree them. I have a hand immersion blender as well as a magic bullet. Worked for me.

I'm at the pureed stage now. You didn't get a little booklet from your doctor? I did. If I was home I would just send it to you (I'm at my BF's till the weekend) It has a pretty clear list.

I don't puree eggs. I scramble them soft and mashed them with my fork. My doc doesn't want me to eat beef yet, so I would stay away from the chili. The fish, if it's canned you don't have to puree. I made fresh tuna the other day and I pureed it. I had to.

Every plan is a little different - I definitely had to puree fish, pureed =/= "kind of mushy." The only things I didn't have to puree were poached and scrambled eggs, refried Beans, yogurt, and cottage cheese (or something like melted cheese if I melted it on top of my refried beans or pureed chicken salad etc.). I would stay away from anything that is not high Protein while on purees, so that means nix the avocados and mushrooms for now. I think the avocados and mushrooms are fine for soft foods though. I'm going to keep my mouth shut about the chocolate except to say it is not permitted on my plan until goal is reached.

I wouldn't eat any kind of chili without pureeing it first.

And yes, stop mixing food and drinks now.

Oh and my 2 cents -- you aren't going to be eating a whole lot of cheese. Full fat isn't going to hurt you. I regularly eat full fat cheese and have never gone over my allotted fat grams for the day (30).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
