Today is the heaviest I will ever be for the rest of my life!

Hi! Newbie here. I'm scheduled for a VSG on 3.28.14 and have 40 pounds to lose before my surgery to get my BMI down to 49. I am 330 pounds today. That's a lot of pounds. However, today I started my diet and will exercise when I get home. I will never be this heavy again. My journey is beginning - and I'm grateful to be surrounded by all the support. Thanks - just had to get that out there....

Congrats on starting your journey! I love your attitude - you're going into this positive. Keep that going! You will have ups and downs between now and surgery day, it won't be all sunshine and lollipops, but you got this!

This will be a great year for you!

That's the spirit! You sound like me when I started. And, by golly, I made it happen. I also realized the need for support...and got it.

I'd bet the farm on you!

Welcome Sleeveless! I know you can do it and succeed with the sleeve and your weight loss beforehand too. I started exactly where you are- 330lbs was my highest weight around October 2012 at 5'5 1/2. I was determined to lose weight on my own and did it gradually- losing about 25lbs before signing up for the sleeve surgery in Feb. 2013. July 2, 2013 Day of surgery (Swedish Hospital in Seattle) I was 289lbs, 49 bmi like your goal for surgery day! :) Today is my six month anniversary and I am now down to 211lbs in size 16 jeans with a total of 119lbs lost since my heaviest! You can do it too- the key is to always keep a positive mindset, exercise, follow the instructions of your surgeon and nutritionist and take one day at a time. If you haven't already, join and use My Fitness Pal- it's a great place to track calories, foods, and activities. Good luck and I look forward to seeing you around!

This thread brought me back to the day I decided to have VSG.

At my first appointment with the bariatric surgeon. I got on the scale and it said 259 pounds (I weighed at home that morning and it was 256 - either way, it was the biggest number I had seen). I cried. I literally stood there on the scale and cried. The nurse didn't quite know what to do - really was I the first person to cry on the scale at the bariatric surgery center?????

I do not remember a time in my life that I was more sad or disappointed in myself. I thought of a football player - I was heavier than a lot football players and about the same as a heavyweight boxer. I'm only 5'3", so put that into perspective!

Tears can be a great motivator! After I stopped crying and talked to the doctor, I knew this was the right journey for me.

It's been chalk full of ups and downs - tears, doubts, 2nd thoughts, more tears, anxiety, etc.

I have to say, though, I am happy I'm going down the path I am! You will, too!

This outpouring of support is.....wow I'm just really feeling it right now and am shedding a few happy tears. It's so helpful to be able to relate. From weight and height to location to even comparing myself to football players. I am soooo not alone!!! xoxo

Today, I feel great! I walked .10 of a mile yesterday and did 50 modified push-ups. Yes my knee and back hurt after walking but a little ice and elevation - well this morning I woke up with no pain! So tonight - I hope to go .20 of a mile. I'm using My Fitness Pal to track my food and exercise - and a pedometer to track my steps. I figured that I need to be on a 900 calorie a day diet in order to lose the 40 pounds before 3.20.14. Yesterday I consumed 1300 calories - but 600 of that was oil popped popcorn with butter - something I can easily cut out. Today, I feel great. Positive - motivated - ready to do this!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
