So aggravated! Why is it taking so long to get my surgery date?!

Recommended Posts

Warning: vent ahead

So, I found out my insurance approved the surgery before Christmas. So I call the bariatric center to find out when my surgery can be scheduled. They said that they would notify the surgeon's office that I was approved and then the surgeon's office would contact the bariatric center with the date and then the center would notify me. I understand the holidays and all making things more difficult, but it's been almost 2 weeks and I am STILL waiting for my date! I call every day to ask if they have it yet and last thing I heard on Dec. 30 was that they would call by the end of the day. Here it is, Jan. 2nd, and STILL NO DATE!

Patience Super! Everyone gets backed up at the holidays and the machinery will get back in motion quickly. Use this time to keep reading and learning. Keep busy. It is a process, setting up an operating room, scheduling anesthetists, getting the admission to the hospital, getting the doctor scheduled, and so forth.

You may have to have some final x-rays or blood tests, so everything has to fall into place. We also had to go to the hospital a week before surgery for pre-screening with an EKG.

It will be here before you know it, so be getting your ducks in a row! Happy New Year and good luck!

There you go! Now you have a month to prepare and read, read, read! I bought a special little calendar and kept notes of the dates, recorded my weights, meal changes pre op and post op. Very helpful keeping things organized and helping me remember! Good luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
