Hi all! I just started my liquid diet today and am now freaking out that I am not doing it right. Of course there is a huge snow storm so no one is in the office and I don't want to mess this up. I think I can have sugar free jell-o, pudding and the carnation instant Breakfast shakes. but what about oatmeal? Is that ok? Yogurt? Are there specific types? Thanks for the help! FYI- my surgeon is Dr. Benedetto, and it will be at Salem (MA)Hospital.

Every doctor is different. On my plan I was allowed vanilla Greek yogurt, or plain, but nothing with fruit in it. Oatmeal was not allowed until post surgery in the pureed stage. Did you not get any paperwork from your doc or the NUT outlining the pre op diet?

We had pages and pages of food rules and information. I took a monthly calendar and wrote it up with the dates for certain food changes before and after surgery. You will read every diet requirement here by different doctors for their patients. No oatmeal by ours until after surgery. I would call your nutritionist or doctors office for quick help if you are in a crisis right now and not sure, or just drink liquids until you are sure and can read your information.

I have read about people cheating with every type of food prior to surgery. I felt like I was cheating even following the guidelines. Our doctor laughed and shared to the group that he found part of a hamburger in someone he sleeved. Maybe he was joking. Anyway, you are not going to be in troble if you are trapped in a snowstorm and have a bite or two of oatmeal or whatever you can find LOL!!

I'm going to stick with clear liquids and the Protein drinks for today and then call tomorrow b/c we are in the middle of a snowstorm and no one is in the office.

That's probably a good idea. Don't panic - you're going to be OK.

I would suggest getting your plan in writing if possible so you can refer back to it over the next couple of weeks.
