onedaycloser 136 Posted January 2, 2014 Does anyone routinely take Prilosec? I've never had problems with Gerd or Heartburn prior to surgery however now after having anything to eat, I have this awful pain feeling in my lower chest area. I'm week 4.5 post-op. Thank you friends!
Fiddleman 4,376 Posted January 2, 2014 I still take 1 Prilosec daily as a precaution. My surgery was 7-2-2012.
2Big2Skate 328 Posted January 2, 2014 Yes I was put on omeprazole 400mg once a day. I still had intense pressure in my chest which (after a swallow study and what not) they determined was acid. So they had me double it to twice daily and all my problems went away. Eating was easy. Where's your pain? Mine felt like pressure right under my sternum. I guess its acid crawling up the esophagus. Does it hurt when you drink Water? And when youve had nothing but liquids? (have to make sure you're not eating too fast or causing food to stack in the esophagus to know if its acid). For me, it was the worst with dairy, but even Water caused it.
Arts137 1,811 Posted January 2, 2014 YES! for at least 6 months after surgery (and I've never had any GERD, etc. either)
onedaycloser 136 Posted January 2, 2014 Yes 2big2skate. Right underneath my sternum. Still working on eating slowly (although what I finest isn't much), and sometimes with fluids I get the same pain. Often times I just have to focus on breathing through my nose and exhaling through my mouth to ease the pain. Meet with doc for 6-week post op in a couple of weeks will mention this. Until then I think I'll start popping Prilosec in the morning to see if this subsides. Or should I do more than 1 a day? Many thanks all!!!
muhsi1 19 Posted January 2, 2014 I take my PPI Nexium every day. It is the first thing I put into my mouth. Firstly I am scared that I cannot distinguish between acid hunger or other hunger and I never want to be hungry. Secondly, I paid for my surgery myself and would not take a chance that an ulcer could mess everything up. We have so little stomach left and the acid could easily damage the sleeve. This is just my take on it. I was a rep for nexium and am a qualified ER and ICU nurse manager and my choice is to take mine daily. This is just my choice and I am by no means suggesting you should do the same. Good luck
onedaycloser 136 Posted January 2, 2014 Is Nexium a better choice than Prilosec? Thanks for your advice really appreciate it!
bulldog1973 88 Posted January 3, 2014 I had mild GERD before my sleeve, so I had been taking one 40mg of Nexium daily for about 2 years before my surgery. Then after my surgery the GERD went to a whole new level, it was horrible. My doctor raised my dose to 40mg twice a day and I haven't had any trouble since. I never miss taking my Nexium or else I will be up in the middle of the night with acid in my throat, its bad.
HardWork13 83 Posted January 3, 2014 I had heartburn prior to my sleeve. Was taking 40 mg omeprazole once a day. Had hiatal hernia fixed @ same time as sleeve. After surgery my heartburn also went to a new level. I had awful heartburn 24/7. I am now on 60 mg dexilant 2x a day and finally don't have gerd!
