OK folks.

Last week one night in the middle of the night I woke up with the nasty acid taste in the back of my throat. I didn't think of it then. Since that night, I've been super hungry. Sticking with approved foods, but wow.

So my question is about how often people take theirs.

Does anyone take it twice per day for acid reflux? Think that's my whole issue with hunger and it took me a week to realize it.

Any veterans have some thought on this?

I go In for my 3 month check up this Friday, so In will double check then but I like to research before hand.

Thanks!

I am on Dexilant and take it 1 x a day. It is a time-release medicine. I had severe heart burn when I had my lapband. I was on prescription PPIs for over three years I started off on the prescription your on but it didn't work for me. I was on protonix which worked for awhile and stopped. I finally found nirvana with Dexilant. Earlier this year prior to the sleeve one time a day wasn't enough and under doctor supervision I increased to twice daily. Now am back on 1 x a day and not one instance of heart burn since my sleeve operation. That alone makes me very happy.

I hope you get some relief. Heartburn can be very painful.

I take mine twice a day. Make sure you are takeit on an empty stomach 30 minutes before eating...or you can take it 2 hours after you eat..just wait another 30 minutes before you eat again.

Wow, I wasn't told any of this. I take it in the morning...but I take my thyroid pill first and then wait 30 mins, then I take the omeprazole and within 15 minutes I start drinking my Protein shake.

Thanks for this! Def going on my list of questions for Friday!

No problem..I have a 4 year old with bad GERD....that is the only reason why I know how to take it. Most doctors dont explain that to you. Shoot even a lot of GI doctors don't but my sons GI doctor does. It really does make a difference.

I haven't even had my surgery yet and I have to take protonix (others didn't work for me) twice daily for GERD.

No problem taking it twice. I used to sell it as a pharmaceutical rep and we had tons of studies showing that it is safe. If it was me, I would take it just to avoid the acid hunger. Once you have the initial acid secretion under control, you could always go down to one again. I am sure your Dr will agree. The last thing you want is acid eroding your newly healed sleeve!

I took a 2nd dose last night and literally could feel it working slowly over like 20 minutes time. Acid hunger went away too. This morning I wasn't feeling ravaging hunger either.

Plus, I took it like Michele above mentioned...30 mins before eating/drinking. Not feeling the acid hunger today either.

Thank goodness for this medicine!

Is Omeprazole OTC safer than Zantac OTC? I still need to take 2 a day one in the am and 1 in the pm and was wondering which one would be safer or if they were equal. I find if I don't take the 2nd Zantac in the early am I will wake up with a slight burn and want to avoid that so I still take the 2nd one in the pm.

I had serious GERD prior to VGS and continued to have yucky reflux following surgery. My bariatric GI tried a few things, and we settled on 1 Pepcid Max strength in a.m., Omeprazole 20 mg prior to dinner and 2 Pepcid Max strength at bedtime. The mix works great and all are available as generics.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
