Dumping 101 & burping anyone?

Recommended Posts

Hello all you Brave sleevers....

Thank you so much for all your sharing. It has helped me so much! I was sleeved on Dec 9th.

Can someone explain dumping?? I've felt sick from time to time and not really sure why?

Also burping constantly like all day. Any remedies??

Happy new year :)

I found this, but I don't know how helpful it is.

I'm 9 days out and while I haven't experienced dumping, I do find myself burping like 3 - 4 times every time I eat (which is really drinking because I'm on full liquids).

I hope that others will chime in, but I've seen other people further out say that burping is often an indication that they're full and not to eat anymore. I don't think that's the case though with us newer sleevers because I'll literally take a couple sips of Water and am burping. However, if I continue to sip, I don't feel like I'm bloated/too full, nor have I ever thrown up or needed to spit out whatever I'm eating.

Get used to burping! As you're so newly sleeved it's probably gas and air from all that sipping. As for dumping, while it's not as common in sleeve patients as run it does happen. If you eat too much of the wrong foods or eat them too quickly, especially early out, you can experience any number of symptoms like headache, diarrhea, vomiting etc.. not fun

Please do read the wiki on dumping. Lots of people use the term to refer to diarrhea but that is not accurate. They are not the same thing.

I'm over a year out, so this probably doesn't apply, but I know that I burp when my tummy is saying it has had enough.. I'd agree with it being just the air from sipping all the time.

My sleeve, after six months out tells me I'm full buy a burp or two. Then if I'm hard headed and opt to push it I get violent hiccups. They hurt too! Lol.

It's a crazy communication but I now listen to the burping.

My dr told me that because the surgery took place right by the nerve that makes you hiccup and burp that right after surgery while the stomach is still swollen it makes you sometimes burp or hiccup. I don't burp much but did hiccup constantly and it was very uncomfortable.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
