Happy 2014, off to a good start

Happy New Year Everyone! I woke up refreshed and ready to start the year off on the right foot. My surgery is January 16th and although my pre-op diet doesn't officially start until the 13th; I have decided that food is my heroin and I need a bit longer to ween myself of it! LOL. So far I have had 2 Protein Shakes, 1 for Breakfast and 1 for lunch and I always drink a lot of Water as well. I wanted to try out the liquid aspect of things, I feel okay; but I kind of have a headache. Has anyone else experienced a headache doing this?

Any time you change your eating habits and reduce carbs and sugar you are going to have a headache. It's your bodies way of telling you thanks for getting the crap out of me. It should only last a few days. Try to hang in there you will be very ready by surgery day,

Also, what sweetener is in your Protein Shakes? I know aspartame and some of the other artificial sweeteners tend to trigger headaches and even Migraines sometimes.

i had headaches for awhile. they got to be really bad. i had to go on medication for Migraines. but i haven't had to use any medication for about 2 months now. so it's as cheryl says your body will get used to your different food choices. hang in there. and good luck with your surgery. i hope post op is uneventful and you heal up fast.

Best wishes to you and your new you for the New year! If you are cutting out caffeine, that too will cause a temporary headache. Karen..aka.kll724

Thanks for the feedback guys! What Cheryl pointed out makes a lot of sense and I will look at the ingredients a bit closer as well. I am lucky that I already started cutting down on my coffee habit a few months ago and I quit soda like 4 years back, so I don't think it is caffiene. 1 day down!!!!

Wow!!! You go girl. Good for you starting earlier than instructed. Yes having a headache is part of your body not having the food and other stuff it has been used to. Just take tylenol or whatever you take and you'll be fine. Congratulations and welcome to banderland.

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery date -- very exciting! I have always found detoxing of any kind can cause a headache at times. Your body will thank you for this extra TLC. I started my pre-op diet a little early, too -- just wanted to get into the pre-surgery mode and feel like I was on my way. Like you, right now -- you are on your way to health and happiness. Here's to 2014 and all it holds for us!

Wow guys!! Thanks for the awesome dose of encouragement! It couldn't have come at a better time. Just got back grocery shopping for my family and I and I was starving. I decided to forgo the shake and have some canned chicken with mustard and salt and pepper, with a few green olives. I am glad I didn't go overboard and surprised how I am satisfied already. Feeling good, and I am getting more and more excited each day!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
