Candace Steele 0 Posted December 31, 2013 I had gastric bypass in 2002. I lost most of my weight quickly and didn't start to regain until after having my second child who is now 4. I saw a new gastroenterologist who ordered an esophogram (?). I had it done today and it showed I have a new "pouch" that is created out of my intestine, just below my pouch that was created during the original gp. Almost immediately, during the procedure, my dr said, that's got to come out. I looked and there was this thing hanging down that appeared to be pretty large. The dr was just there to observe the swallow to see how things went down so I didn't have a lot of time to ask questions when it was over. He didn't tell me what this "thing" is called and I can't find anything on the internet. It isn't a fistula, at least not a traditional one that connects back to my old stomach. It is like part of my intestine bulged out at some point in the past and now a long pouch has formed where food is stored. There is only one opening. I'm pretty grossed out! I feel like I have a new appendage. What is this?
ginger0406 1 Posted December 31, 2013 It can be just that, a secondary pouch. You could have a couple of sutures that were not approximated close enough and when you got pregnant and things were pushed around, it could have been enough to create a sublet pouch. I had a sublet pouch immediately after my rny. I could not stop vomiting and lost all of my weight in about 3 1/2 months. After months and months of testing they did an barium swallow and it took about 2 seconds for them to see what was wrong. Hope this helps.
Candace Steele 0 Posted December 31, 2013 Was your secondary pouch off of your original pouch or off of your intestine? What was done to repair yours? I hope to talk to the dr tomorrow but I'm not sure that I will get to.
ginger0406 1 Posted December 31, 2013 My secondary pouch was off of my original pouch. let went in laproscopic and cut off the secondary pouch and re-stitched the orignial pouch.I'm sure you will, who is your surgeon? I also am a nurse. The procedure itself should probably be outpatient, or maybe 1-2 days in the hospital. They will probably have you do a barium swallow after your surgery to make sure anatomically everything is back to normal
Candace Steele 0 Posted December 31, 2013 What I don't understand about my situation is that the new pouch thing is off of my intestines below my pouch. How does that even get started? My Dr. is Dr. Uchal in Jacksonville, FL,
ginger0406 1 Posted December 31, 2013 Did they tell you if the pouch had Fluid in it or is it solid?
Candace Steele 0 Posted December 31, 2013 The dr said it's taking in food and it sits there until it is completely broken down. I don't think it's solid because the liquid went into it immediately.
Candace Steele 0 Posted December 31, 2013 I got an answer today. It's called a "blind loop". I'm going to see the Dr on Tuesday to discuss surgery. While he's in there, he can tighten up anything that needs to be taken care of.
