Vitamin Question For Veterans

Recommended Posts

When, if ever can I start taking Vitamins in pill form instead of chewables? Prior to the RNY six months ago I started taking Kirkland (Costco) Daily Multi Pack and I'd like to go back to taking them again if/when I can.

My surgeon had said after 1 month I could try whole. I tried smaller ones and no problem then got braver and have been ok since. Different surgeons tell you different things so of course consult yours and go with what he/she tells you and you feel comfortable with. I've also heard of people being given whole pill form while inpatient post rny so..? I honestly have chewed a pull after my 1 month mark.

I'm 20 months post op and it took me a while to start swallowing whole pills. I started with the tiny pills first and when they were OK I went to the medium pills, etc. etc. No I take very large pills and have no problems what so ever. Everyone is different and can tolerate different things and different times. Start small first....... good luck.

Thanks for the info. I decided to give it a go and took the multi-pack since I haven't had any issues taking prescription pills. So far, so good. I am going to continue to take the chewable Multivitamin and Calcium for my second and third doses throughout the day since I don't need to take the rest of the Vitamins that are in the multi-pack more than once a day and the chewables taste so good!

I tried switching to non-bariatric Vitamins after about 8 years. I thought that they would be okay nutritionally. and they are so much cheaper. For me I was wrong. If you look at the percentage difference between Bariatric Vitamins and regular vitamins you will be quite surprised, also the bariatric vitamins are made for us as gastric acid or other body fluids to be absorbed. I went back to Bariatric Advantage vitamins a month ago and my energy level is already so much better. I take chewables but they also make pill form. As for cost I have to remember I am worth it :)

My surgeon told me I had to stick to chewables or crush for the rest of my life. All my meds have to be crushed. Is he being too restrictive?

I would follow your surgeon's instructions. Each surgeon has different experiences w/different patients and base their instructions on those personal experiences. Mine is strict about alcohol use because they've seen transfer addictions and liver failure (resulting in death) in patients. He also prefers chewable Vitamins and Calcium for life, but I can swallow any pill the size of a Tylenol tablet or smaller. Some keep you on fluids longer and probably have reasons for it. Whatever the differences in our instructions we should each follow our own surgeons instructions - we chose them, we trust them, so we should do as they say.

Just my thoughts on it. :-)

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
