Protein Shake Pre Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Bawaji, this surgery comes with a medically supervised diet and you should not be guessing what to eat. I have learned that many of us have different doctors and meal requirements here, and if you are having a doctor do surgery on you, you MUST get guidance from him or find another doctor?

Three weeks after surgery I tried to chew a small piece of chicken with rough consequences. You have to know what to do in these situations, so you have to be able to call your doctor for help.

What is the situation with your surgeon?

So whats it like the first 4 weeks? Just Soup all day? How about half boiled runny eggs? It's also hard for me to get separated from my morning tea! :)

I'm just on day one of my pre-op, so I can't tell you how much you or I will lose, although I'm doing the two shakes and then a small protein/veg at dinner. I was told that I could have hot tea as long as it was decaffeinated and using an alternative to sugar that was "approved". Good luck!

LOL...yet to get operated upon....i guess all that will come later! My Surgeon has cut me open twice before for other ailments so I got no issues with him!

I also read up a lot. ... Finally decided to go ahead with this only after considering it for a full year! And that to only after I speaking with someone who had the same thing done exactly 1 yr ago - he's lost 65 kilos so far - was operated by the same surgeon on 17th Jan, 2013

Technically I cannot have a sleeve done becoz I have a large Hiatus Hernia but my doc is attempting to repair that using some other tech/method as I was totally against the RnY surgery!

There are many, many people that have a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time as they get their sleeve operation. It's fairly common.

I am pre-surgery for the gastric sleeve, here is what I have been told by my doctor and various books and web sites. while in the hospital you will be given ice chips, Water and possibly broth. when you go home, wk 1 you are on Clear Liquids only, (water, crystal light, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, broths of various kinds. wk 2and 3 a what I call mushy diet, liquids with some body, and start adding your Protein Shakes, plain yogurts pureed veggies etc. 4th week you start on soft eggs, fruits finely chopped meats etc. and measure everything constantly. Oh and tea and coffee needs to be caffeine free. (I am a coffee junky) this is what I have been told, hope it helps some. suppose to add different Vitamins also, good luck

HH repair yes, but not with a sleeve. Fundoplication is the process of wrapping the upper part of your stomach around the esophagus to tighten the hiatul valve. In a sleeve situation there is no stomach left so the HH tightening has to be done with something else. What that is I haven't bin told as yet.

Mine will be

2 weeks liquids that must go through a strainer.

3 weeks puréed that must literally be baby food consistency

3 weeks mushy/soft foods

Regular foods as tolerated.

Instead of fundiplication, they use mesh to tighten up the opening of where the diaphragm is, after pulling your stomach back. Where your stomach has prolapsed through. Then perform the sleeve during the same operation. Maybe that isn't common practice where you live, but it is in the US.

LOL! In India. Yes it's a large HH! :(

Was just checking out some videos earlier and found this one interesting:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ABQhu6uli0

Altho can't figure out from this video how the esophagus is tightened! ??

So after your HH repair you don't have the usual nausea associated with the sleeve op? Really keen on knowing how this turns out. ...

The 2 of you went thru the op together??

Tell me about the nausea symptoms after the HH repair. And the acidity. Do you still get it or its completely gone? I've suffered with it 15+ years now n completely fed up...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
