The New Year Brings With It Peak Flu Activity

Recommended Posts

Our on site Doctor sent us this Wellness tip today, and I thought it might be something good to share. Please take care of yourself during this Holiday Season, and be well!

Sadly, five flu-related deaths were reported in Texas over the last few days; some involving unvaccinated individuals. With peak flu activity taking place in January and February, such deaths make it all the more important to protect yourself and your family from the flu.

Vaccination is the best way to protect against the flu. The CDC recommends everyone six months and older get the flu vaccine. The H1N1 flu strain is a component of this year’s vaccine and can provide protection.

Also, take these additional everyday precautions to help prevent the spread of germs leading to influenza:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water; or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to limit any spread.
  • Practice good health habits. Get plenty of sleep and exercise, manage your stress, stay hydrated and eat healthy.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Try to avoid contact with sick people.

You should check with your doctor if you develop symptoms of the flu. Symptoms include:

  • A fever above 101 degrees
  • Chills and body aches
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches

Remember: Influenza anti-viral drugs given within the first 24-48 hours can be beneficial.

Hope these tips will keep you healthy during this peak influenza season.

Knock on Wood....

I used to get sick all the time, seemed every time I turned around something would bother me....I started to also feel as though I was allergic to just about everything....

I have to say, since loosing weight, exercising more and eating only the best foods, I have not been the slightest bit sick in almost 3 years now....

Just an observation.....

I do get my Flu Shot every year...I'm also not stupid...I am around and handling some really sick kids, many from not the nicest environments, all day long, exposed to all kinds of body fluids, and other things....

People ask me why am I wearing scrubs all day...it is because that 7 year old boy just vomited all over me !!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?
