Surgery is tomorrow and now I have a cold! :(

Recommended Posts

I have been fighting this cold all weekend and now it's settling into my chest a little. I'm worried that they'll tell me I can't do the surgery tomorrow but I won't be able to afford to meet my out-of-pocket in 2014 within the insurance's window of approval. <sigh> Anyone have a positive thought they can throw at me to help me calm down? I have been working toward this day for months - why do I have to get sick NOW? ;(

Well...if you haven't had any fever... I'm not a nurse but I would think you may be ok for surgery based on that. I had some congestion (allergies) right before my surgery and I was worried about anesthesia. It wasn't a problem. Hang in there! Good Luck!!

Thanks :) All I can do is go in and see what they say, I guess. I tend to worry myself sick about things that never happen - wish I could take a sleeping pill and pass out until it's time to go to the hospital but I have a feeling I'll be tossing and turning all night :/

I totally understand your nerves. I didn't sleep the night before my surgery...I kept telling myself I was being silly. I cried too. I even woke up that morning telling my husband I wasn't sure I could go through with it...LOL...but he calmed me by reminding me all the time I had spent getting ready for this and how bad I really needed to do this. I was 207 #s, with high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and bad knees. I am so thankful that I went through with the surgery. I stopped taking BP medicine the day I went home from the hospital. My surgery was Sept. 10, 2012. I have lost 63 #s. I weigh 144. My goal was originally 140. My experience has been a good one. I don't regret it one bit. It is a tool that I wish I had known about long ago. Good Luck on your journey!

I asked my surgeon if having a cold would prevent me for being sleeved. He said if I'm leaking green from my face, yes. If I'm running a fever, yes. If it's just allergies or congestion, no.

Have you been loading up on Vitamin c? Maybe you can break it up before surgery !

Best of luck!!

Thanks for your support everyone - I knew I was over-reacting - surgery on MOnday went well and I am back home - yay! Haven't seen a peep of that cold since MOnday morning. Happy New Year!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
