Newbie - waiting for my initial consult 3/26

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I'm brand new to this site and I just wanted to say HI and introduce myself! I'm Jennifer, 37, in NJ, happily married with two boys (the youngest is just 6 weeks old), a veterinarian, and absolutely impatient to have my lapband surgery and get thin and healthy!! Currently my BMI is 43.4 or so and I have at least 125 pounds to lose. I can't quite figure out how I got this big...

My best friend of 24 years did the research and talked to me about getting banded and I immediately knew it was for me! We made our appointment with a surgeon for Monday, March 26 and neither one of us can wait!!! It's just so exciting! We're hoping to have our surgeries together. From what I can tell (according to an email from my health insurance), the surgery will be covered by my insurance if I qualify and I can't wait to get that whole process started!!

Just wanted to say hello and here I am, lurking and soaking up all the information I can!

Jenny

Hi Jenny, WELCOME to LBT. Lots of valuable readings here.

And if you cant find what youre looking for, just ask!

Good luck - MOST esp. with having a 6 wk old BeBe to love on during this phase... (MAJOR congrat's btw!)

Another good forum for getting banding information is band2gether.net --- not as big as this place, so you may be heard a little louder!

Good luck - and again, WELCOME!

Hi Judy!! You're a vet too, that's SO cool! I never find other vets anywhere! Small animal or large? What school did you graduate from and when? Do you have boys or girls? I wish you the BEST of luck with your journey, it looks like we'll be doing it at almost the same time! I have about 125 (ugh) pounds to lose, so maybe we can be weight loss buddies! :)

Good luck to you!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
