I think it really varies from person to person! I had terrible nausea immediately following surgery. I wasn't surprised because many medications (especially narcotic pain meds), airplane travel, sea travel, etc. make me very nauseous easily. I stopped pain meds the day after surgery for this reason (did not take anything else for pain), drank lots of fluids and the nausea was gone in less than a day! The only time I experience nausea now (I'm nearly 3 weeks post-op), is when I overeat or eat too fast which is EASILY avoidable.

I didn't have any nausea, not even immediately after waking up from general anesthesia. I had one of those ear patch things put on before surgery and I think that probably helped.

I had the Scoplamine (?) patch, and overall, I didn't experience significant nausea. My pain wasn't as well managed as it could have been that first day, so I had two instances where I felt nauseated in relation to my pain climbing, but nausea is my typical response to pain. I never threw up, and the nausea never got out of control, but mentioned the nausea to the nurse both times, and a shot in my IV took care of things. After 24 hours, I didn't experience nausea anymore. In fact, the anti-nausea meds I had at home for post-op still have not been opened at almost 4 weeks out.

I have a history of nausea with general anesthesia so I made sure they were giving me anti-nausea meds the whole time in the hospital. By the time I got home, I didn't need them. I rarely have any now, it's more discomfort if I eat or drink too quickly.

My surgery was Dec. 17th. I had lots of nausea/vomiting for the first week. I think my problem is that I couldn't keep up with the liquids and being dehydrated made everything worse. After getting two additional IVs after I left the hospital, I could finally keep up with it and wasn't nauseated after that. So keep up with the liquids!

Day 1 and 2 were pretty bad. I'll be honest. I smacked a nurses hand when she waved a alcohol pad in front of me! Get out of my way I'm gonna puke!

The Zonfran wasn't working at all, so it turned out to be that I'm REALLY sensitive to dilaudid, so when we changed the pain med the nausea went away and never came back.

---

I was in love with dilaudid and begged to take it home but the staff didn't allow it. The roxicet was not strong enough at all for me in the hospital but while at home it was ok. Roxi just made me sleepy initially. I had 2 Patches in hospital so no nausea no vomiting and don't think I ever really had nausea but took a few pills when I had broth at home just in case. I'm 18 days out and just feel weak due to insufficient fluids and hernia pain

I had HORRIBLE nausea! When I first woke up from surgery I had massive gas pain. With the help of Gas ex, that went away. The nausea was another story. It was constant. The zofran didn't work for me either. It didn't help when i tried to get some Water down.

All I can say is...it dies get better!

I only had nausea for the first 72 hours post-op. It's how I react to anesthesia. Since then, I have not had nausea related to my surgery.

Luckily no nausea whatsoever. I'm only 10 days out and I've heard of it kicking in later when we try new foods, but so far so good. I had another surgery that I woke up from EXTREMELY nauseous, not to mention I get motion sickness pretty easily. So I warned the anesthesiologist preop and he had the nurse give me something IV before surgery. Whatever it was made me see double (which surprisingly didn't make me nauseous) and I woke up just fine.

Hi -

It's not awful but it is present most days and fairly tolerable! I find it to be more of a constant sour stomach kind of feeling as opposed to nausea! As each week goes by it gets a little better for me quite honestly,(I'm six weeks post op). I really do believe it's simply our new pouches trying to adjust and cope with it new way of life!

No regrets here! losing weight at really nice pace and feeling really good these days! I truly believe the nausea will pass in time!

Good luck and go for it...

I had the patch before surgery that lasted 3 days and they sent me home with 2 more, also I am on omparazole 40 mg cap once a day for 6mos.I never had any nausea at all I guess I was Blessed.Try drinking green tea with different flavors and use a tsp of honey to a cup of hot tea. It seems to help settle my stomach sometimes.

Me too, and because we were prepared for it I had meds in the hospital and that was that. No problems at home.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
