Post op diet stages

Hi. So I'm nearing the end of my full liquid stage and i've developed a strong aversion to protien shakes which of course means my Protein needs aren't being met. I've been eating some soft foods (and honestly some that are more like normal food) to get my protein and I fell a little bad about not following the diet stages precisely. But I haven't had any problems with any of the foods I've been eating, even the regular ones. I guess I just wanted some opinions on this because I hate not "following the rules" but on the other hand I need to get the protien somehow. Thoughts?

Hi there!!! Don't feel bad about not "following the rules" because this thing definitely gets tiring after awhile. I'm in the puree phase, but I'm allowed to have blended Soups with meat and this is how I get mine in. You may want to try Isopure protein juice drinks (Vitamin Shoppe) or there is this product called ProtiDiet that mixes with water/juice. Hope this is helpful and continued success to you.

I have issues with it too and have been having little bites of food, like chilli and Soup. I think if we Keep it small and well chewed it's better than not eating.

Hi, I am on week 6 and can have soft foods now. I too am very sick of protien shakes. I am finding though I cant eat anything but soft liquid type foods. Everything no matter how i chew it makes me hurt and I get sick. I think I just want to rush things too much. So back to Soup for me for a bit. I am also going to buy baby spoon and fork and a nice tiny plate just for me so then I wont take too much when I do get to eat. No matter what difficulties I have I am still excited to see the scale go down.

Hi Im 4yrs out in March. I remember this stage with contempt and distain..lol..at this stage I was second guessing my decision, thought I'd committed self living suicide..lol..THIS TO SHALL PASS! Your in the FEELING OUT stage..and the what can I's...feeling insecure about how much you actually know about the stages your going through. I read all the literature, still like having a baby, not till it actually happens, then I realized all the standard rules didn't apply to me!! I did not have a smooth beginning. Horrible in fact. Everything that I had researched ( 2 years worth) went straight out the frigging window!! Now I felt alone. One week out and felt like a failure. Silly really, when I look back on it. But with a surgery as major as the ones we have all had, there can be serious consequences. So the doubts and insecurities creep in quickly. THIS TO SHALL PASS. The knowledge you are about to gain about yourself and this surgery is going to be PHENOMINAL. good luck and remember your creating good health and unbelievable knowledge.

do you remember how long it took before you could eat food right off the plate, not pureed. I am on week seven and needed some new ideas on food besides yogurt or applesauce. And Soup is getting old even when i hated soup to begin with.

At 6 weeks I could advance my diet as tolerated. That means right off the plate. I stayed pretty soft. Chewed stuff to mashed potato consistency. I ate lentils. I preferred savory to sweet. I ate a lot of mashed Beans. You can thin anything with chicken stock. Lol.

Some things I just couldn't eat for 6 months. It's a lot of trial and error you build in around your mainstays. I ate cottage cheese with salsa. Beans. Yogurt. Moist meat. Cook your meat in broth/sauce. Ground meat and raw veggies were hard to digest until 6 months.

HTH. If you're hungry, eat! Just stop eating when you first notice it at your breastbone. This is truly your very personal connection to the journey.

ok thanks for all this...so far only meat i have eaten is chicken and turkey that i put in the food chopper so I am too scared to chew it myself lol. What about fruit like fresh fruit when did you eat that. PLus what about salads...

I'm a rule follower. Lol. It took me a while to get to fruit because of restriction. I really had to work to get Protein and veg. I also workout vigorously so I need a complex carb in the morning before a workout. This was true at 8 weeks.

I did not really eat and enjoy salad until Spring. I could eat it at 6 months (January). I just had a hard time with raw veggies. I could even eat nuts before raw veg. Also, I couldn't eat much salad and it seemed a lot of work to only eat 1/4 cup and left a lot of waste.

I made smoothies with berries, pineapple, peaches, etc straight away. I ate thin sliced apple with Peanut Butter probably as early as 8 weeks. So I only ate/eat fruit when it's paired with a Protein. Protein, protein, protein!

meat really, really needs to be moist. That's the key. Anything greasy will likely cause you problems. So stay away from fatty meat.

ok you are so very helpful thank you so much. I dont know much or anything about fish so that is the hard part. might have to find some friends to help me learn who to cook it and what kind, I tried the cheap stuff in the store like captain hilander and omg I was so sick. I didnt even eat the batter but I think the oil from it was what made me sick. This is such a huge learning thing, I am not complaining just finding it so hard to know what to eat. Good thing I am never hungry.

You can get salmon and tilapia in the freezer section in a bag of single serve portions. Just take out a packet and run under cool Water until thawed (about 5 mins). Then just stick it in a non-stick frying pan on low to medium heat with a little salt, pepper, lemon, dill, whatever seasonings you like. Take a spatula and after about 3 mins on each side press it into the top of the fish. If it breaks apart easily it is done. I live off this!

Ok I am going to have to get brave and try to cook some fish lol....this may sound dumb but do they have those small bones in there..I know i ate some when I was a kid and there was all these tiny bones in it. ewww.

No they don't have bones! And if you go to the states fish is much cheaper there especially salmon.

Salmon bones, the small ones, are soft and full of calcium! You could try buying small, cooked pieces from a deli counter. Find what you like. It's more expensive; still, you can control how much you're buying and get goo ideas of what you like and how to prepare it. So many good ideas!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
