Why Liberals are Right to Hate the Ten Commandments

Recommended Posts

TOM, I do want the Ten Commandments to guide my life, and I am not the one imposing them on anyone, remember the author for the Ten Commmandments is God, they are imposed on people because we belong to Him. He has the right to impose and demand. (no offense to those who dont believe that He exist) Remember secondly, He paid a very high price for us so we are twice His.
When God comes down from Heaven and says, "I want these words in every school and courthouse" then that will be fine. But when the US government says it or the government of the state of Florida says it, that is a different story.

I trust God. I do not trust either the US government or the government of the state of Florida or the government of any other state.

After 5 years when the US government or the government of any state says, "We are going to change a couple of words here and there in these commandments. We put them up, so we can change them." Then what do you do?

That is why I and many ministers and Bishops do not want the 10 Commandments or any other religious documents in public schools or courthouses.

Like many other Liberals, I don't hate the Ten Commandments. I am every bit as Christian as you. Please stop painting with such a broad brush.

I pledge not to vote for Bill Clinton for president in 2008.

Can you pledge not to vote for the adulterers running as Republicans?:faint:

Only if you promise not to vote for adulterers in the Democratic party. (UH OH.. we may not be voting!!)

I had a hard time getting past the title "Why liberals are right to hate the Ten Commandments"

I'm liberal, and I don't hate them.

Do you have any proof that either Hillary or Obama are adulterers? Or Edwards or Gore, for that matter?

Forget about proof. I have not seen any innuendo even o the right-wing blogs about that issue.

They have tried to smear Obama about being a Muslim terrorist, and the usual stuff about Gore and Edwards being Rich, but nothing about adultery.

Unless Hillary got even. Did Hillary bang Kenneth Starr?

I'm a liberal and an atheist and I don't hate them. I've been through this logic on another thread when I was told a series of things that atheists hate. I'm not familiar enough with Michael Medved to know where that leaves you. Perhaps he belives that "liberal christian" is an oxymoron. (?)

A surprising number of people do.

I know. :( I saw my cousins two weeks ago. Some of them, anyway. They're all quite deep in their religion, being life-long members of the local Catholic church.

More specifically, I spoke with them about politics. Eventually. The conversation started with them asking my opinion of one of their classmates who had become pregnant and was being urged by the father to have an abortion. By virtue of that discussion, we evolved into something more political. The eldest (in her 20s) commented that she was a republican, which surprised me because I never had her pegged as a political creature. She's nice, but rather checked-out. I asked her why she said she was a republican, and she said, "Because I am conservative." So I asked her what conservative meant and she said, "It means I'm a christian." I asked her if liberals could be christians, too, and she said, "Not according to our church." *sigh*

My little anecdote is so sad on so many levels.

Yes, it really is. Too many people don't really think about how they vote and why, and what they stand for and how that matches up with candidates. And I don't mean just religious people.

I have said this more times than I can count, but I truly wish the vote campaigns (e.g. Vote or Die) would taper off. People are feeling more obligated to cast their vote because it's their right and their duty, but they're casting uninformed votes. What's worse - not voting at all, or voting for something when you don't know what you're voting for?

I don't have any official numbers on this, but I know in a discussion we had at work during the last election -- there were about 11 of us talking, and 3 of us understood what the candidates stood for, what the ammendments really meant, etc. The others cited reaons for their votes including, "Liked his name", "It's my favorite number", and "I saw it on a billboard". (Marketing is effective afterall)

These aren't kids, either. I was the youngest of the bunch. And most people involved in the discussion have at least as many investments in the outcomes as I do, if not more (e.g. children).

I couldn't agree with you more. And it drives me crazy. I really worry about folks that vote for a candidate because they have "a really cool name" or "their campaign posters rock!"

*sighs*

Well, the post right above yours has good examples!

I know people who vote for all kinds of reasons, that don't make sense to me.

Wow, is this true. But this election may bring many more people who have never examined their positions before out to the table. A guy in my office was one of them (non-religious Catholic voting straight Republican for 25 years...because his parents did, and he has this sense--based on nothing--that Republicans won't raise his property taxes), but now he's paying attention for the first time and, amazingly, doesn't yet know how he'll vote next year.

I am so proud of him! For four years we've been telling him to look beyond his own backyard and just think about more than one issue before casting a vote. And though it took a national catastrophe to make it happen, there may yet be a silver lining to all this.

I'll be fascinated to see what voter turnout is in November of '08.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
