Whey Protein Shakes Go Right Through Me! Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I've had Gastric Bypass in July 2012. I'm trying to up my Protein using the shakes again but I'm finding they go right through me and then I'm running to the bathroom for the next 4 hours or more and my system is off for the rest of the day. I know we can become lactose intolerant however, I don't believe there is any lactose in the brands I've used. I'm wondering if there is something else in the shakes throwing me off.

Any recommendations?

I suppose I could try soy but, they claim having too much soy isn't good for people either. Has anyone else had this issue? What are you currently using?

You can have an intollerance even to whey Protein isolate. Instead of soy if you're concerned about too much (kinda depends on how much you plan to supplement, ya know), try those containing egg protein. I think this is what Unjury uses, but if you go to a place like GNC or Super supplements they can probably help you find others or the dietician/nutritionist at your surgeon's office can help. There's also vegan options like hemp, pea, spirulina, and brown rice protein out there. The natural foods section of my local grocery store carries these. You'll get a lot of mixed feedback on the effectiveness of vegan Proteins here and elsewhere, so best to consult your dietician or nutritionist on these.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
