Question about Post-Op Weight Loss

Recommended Posts

So I'm a little over a week post-op and the scale hasn't moved. I'm feeling kind of down about this. I am still quite bloated from the surgery so, I know this affects how much weight loss I am seeing right now. Is it normal to have little to no weight loss right after surgery?

I had very little til the two week mark. I retained all kinds of Fluid from the surgery. I am down 26 pounds in less than 6 weeks so hang in there! It will happen!

I am 4 days post-op now. When I came home, I was 5 pounds heavier. The surgeon suggested that I not look at the scale at least for a week, and then, only once a week. However, I got on the scale this morning, and my hospital weight is starting to come down. Hopefully it will continue in that direction :)

Yes, that's absolutely normal! I gained about 7 lbs in the hospital from fluids, too. Immediately after surgery, your body is still recovering from the trauma. Don't worry about the number on the scale right now...just focus on getting your fluids & Protein in. Let your body have the time it needs to recuperate & just know the scale will start to move. Hang in there!

I also gained about 5 lbs after surgery. I lost that plus another 8 pounds by the two week mark. Don't worry.

I've seen plenty of people say the same thing on here. I didn't weigh myself much in the beginning because I was really focused on just getting through each day hydrated. But considering the trauma done to the body during surgery, I am sure there is some short term Water retention going on.

I know it's v difficult to do, but try not to rely on the scale in these early weeks. Your body is busy doing incredible things!

I am 3 months out. I remember dropping something like 25#. Then for over 2 weeks my scale did not budge & I thought, "this can't be it?!" The dieticians told me not to worry. I'm now down 58#. So I believe if you follow the postop eating recommendations the weight loss will begin again.

I had my one week post op visit and was down 20# in three weeks. Two were the liquid fast and one week post op. My Dr. also don't get on the scale right away. We all want to see the results of our sacrifices but I think getting hung up on a number is short sighted. I lost #170 pounds with diet and exercise, but put 150# back on. I think I focussed too much on hitting that goal number and was poorly prepared mentally for what to do after that. This time I know the pounds will come off, I will hit a bottom number at some point, so now my focus is on the rest of my life as being the goal. I picture myself 2,3, 5, 10 years down the road and being healthy. Trust me, the real fight begins once you hit that goal weight. I am not going to lose that fight again.

I was up 5 pounds 5 days post op. Didn't weigh myself again until today (11 days postop) and I'm now down to what I was the day of surgery. Don't weigh so often and certainly don't stress about it this early on. It took you years to put on and maintain your weight. It's not going to come off in just a few weeks , or even a few months.
