Band Erosion

Recommended Posts

I was banded in October 2003 by Dr. Ortiz. I had my band removed in August of 2006. I went in to have a slip fixed to find out that my band eroded and the tubing eroded through my colon. I want another band but everyone that I've talked to (not banded of course) thinks I am crazy. I struggle daily with my weight. I've worked hard (Weight Watchers) since August, and I've only gained about 25 lbs. I found out I was pregnant and I miscarried but since then I've lost about 15 of those 25. While I enjoy eating healthy, I just can not see myself counting points and measuring EVERYTHING for the rest of my life. I miss my band...I know he's out there somewhere...I'm just looking for his replacement. :-)

Not sure, if you erode once are you likely to do so again? They haven't even figured out what causes it to happen in the first place.

Your poor colon!

What about VSG? Is that an option?

What does Dr. O say about a 2nd band?

Might want to go to Dr. C's site and ask some of these questions. He is here (usually daily) but I think he prefers folks with questions post them on his website.

You're not alone! There's several members here that eroded and are interested in another band. (Penni60 is one that comes to mind)

(((another Ortiz erosion?!?!?!))))

Im hoping you are interested in finding a NEW surgeon to be re-banded by. I just looked at your profile and saw that you are in Flordia. I know there is an awesome group of surgeons that specialize in AGB outside of New Orleans area - I can get you more info if your interested.

know what??

if I lost MY band, I'd probably seeking rebanding after everything healed up! I dont think you're crazy - I think you're keeping it real. I couldnt do 'points' forever either!

Good luck.

I can totally see wanting to be banded again--working on it, in fact--but in the case of erosion I'd want to be sure I had a CLEAN bill of health first. But if a doctor I trusted advised that it would be safe to proceed, I'd be on it like white on rice.

Stupid question, What is an erosion and how common are they?

I would like to know too... Does your stomach erode or does the band and if your colon gets pucntured - aren't your going to die from the posioning.... My Dad's colon burst and he was in the hospital when it did and due to the surgery and bad heart after about 3 weeks he passed away.... This is why i don't want bypass I don't want anyone messing with my intestines

That's a good question! I want to know more about erosion....what causes it? What are the symptoms if it does become eroded??

I personally wouldn't get another band after an erosion. The risk of a second erosion is very high and tubing eroding through the colon is very serious. Have you thought about the sleeve gastrectomy?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
