Minimal Preop Diet Weight Loss - Is that normal?

Recommended Posts

I have been on the preop diet now for 9 days and have only lost 4lbs, I keep reading that most people have lost 10-15lbs. I have not cheated. Has anyone else experienced this? Now I wonder if the band will even work for me.........

Feeling discouraged. :(

Hi Sarah, you're doing great -- don't worry about any one else but YOU! The pre-op diet has a lot to do with Water weight and you'll probably drop a few suddenly. But if not, don't worry! And the band has nothing to do with whatever we do pre-op -- it's designed to help shrink the liver prior to surgery. The band will help dim your appetite but it may take filling to gett here, so be prepared for a couple of months of adjustments. You are going to do great!

Do not, I repeat, do not compare yourself with anyone else be it pre-op or post-op weight loss. This is your journey and no one else's. Come to this site for support and advice but not comparisons. Otherwise, you are setting yourself up for potential disappointment. Good luck, follow your doctor's protocol and enjoy the changes to follow.

i was so disgusted with myself with my preop weight loss. i was supposed to lose 5% of my wt. so i started as i was directed a carb free diet almost 4 mos pre op. i lost a grand total of 12lbs. it was the hardest wt. loss i ever faced. i kept yelling at myself that if i could diet and lose wt. i wouldn't need the wls. i must of did pretty well liver wise because most of my hardware is on the right side. and the abd. ultra sound i just had showed no abnormalities with any of my organs. i suppose that would be a nsv. good luck and best wishes as you go forward. and everyone is correct, do not judge yourself on what other ppl do. eat healthy, exercise and you can't ask more of yourself.

Another reason not to compare your loss to everyone else's is that there is such a wide range of pre-op diets. Some, such as mine, was Clear liquids ( no calories ) for 7 days. Others you'll hear having some sort of shakes, some one MEAL, some just low calorie.

Some range from a couple of days....to a few weeks. You say you have not cheated....so you followed your instructions. What else could you possibly do? It'll be fine!

As the others have stated, you can't compare yourself to anyone! As long as you're following the rules your surgeon gave you, you're doing great!!!!

Good luck!

My Dr not require me to do pre-op diet. He said that you don't lose enough to really make a difference, plus its to help reduce a fatty liver.

My doctor wanted me to lose 10-12 pounds prior to the band. He took a percentage of my weight to determine how much. I went on a massive diet of lots of veggies (oil/vinegar) liquid Protein, lowfat greek yogurt and lost 34 pounds prior to surgery.

I have no problem losing weight, just keeping it off was my problem. The band does help.

Best wishes and Keep the Faith.

It's true that the purpose of the pre-op is to drop you 10-15 lbs but results are NOT typical. I did lose 13 myself but it was by the last day. Your body is still adjusting. If you are being honest as I'm sure you are about not cheating, then even if your weight isn't dropping, your body internally is still prepping for your new life. Don't use this as any indication of your future success. You can do this! Good luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
