For those of you who had a drain....

Recommended Posts

OK, for some reason I'm really freaking out that I'm going to have a drain installed. I'm convinced that it's going to hurt to have it removed. The procedure will be done in my surgeon's office. She told me that it "feels weird" to come out but it shouldn't hurt. Is she telling the truth??!?

I had a drain and to be honest it was more a nuisance than painful. You have to be careful not to pull on it. I pinned mine to the inside of my gown. It didn't hurt at all when it was removed. They did the removal right in my hospital room. It felt weird but didn't hurt.

I have not had the sleeve surgery yet, but several years ago I had a breast lift done and had one drain in each breast. I too was scared of the removal....but as others have said it did not hurt. It was a weird sensation that made my stomach feel queezy for a second and then it was over. Really, it was the least bothersome of the recovery process.

There is some swelling around my incision where the drain if hanging out. Plus a little odor. I wonder if this will make a difference.

It is a very weird sensation but I was so happy to get it out I would have suffered through much worse. I started feeling so much better after it was out (10 days after surgery), less achy. It comes out so quickly. Don't worry.

Was it always that color when they put the drain in? The only reason i ask is i am a surgical nurse and have patients with drains all the time

the brown has been around and lightened up. No creamy white Oh, its pink around my incision (and some other incision) I have 6 plus a drainage tube. I'm not getting really any blood out.

Actual having bloody drainage is normal. Has your doctor started u on antibiotics? It sounds like you have a infection. But i am not a doctor so dont get scared because right antibiotics do wonders. Foul smell and color is indication of infection. Have your doctor look at it. They will probably take a sample and send to lab. Like i said i am not doctor but i would not wait on it either. Better be safe then sorry.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
