Homemade protein shake recipes?

Recommended Posts

I'm in Australia and I can't get all the great low-cal low-carb high-Protein shakes you guys in the US have, like Premier Protein. Even Syntrax nectar costs me twice what it costs you guys. There are just a few options that are relatively high quality.

Optifast VLCD have 17 grams of Protein for 152 calories.

Musashi has one variety that has 25 grams for 113 cals and one that has 30 grams for 171 (closest I can find to Premier but not RTD). I haven't tried it yet but probably will when my Optifast runs out.

There is another brand here called CelebritySlim. They taste great but are comparatively low-protein and high-carb. They also have other things like tea tree oil that I find fishy.

Short of racking up big import costs, I think maybe my best bet is buying pure unflavored WPI (I can get it here) and making up my own shake recipes. I'd ideally like to stay around the 30 grams mark and have 170 or less calories. Most of the homemade shake recipes I see online are more like 300-500 calories.

Has anyone tried this? How did it come out?

Nobody? Oh well. I picked up a small jar of the Musashi with the 30g Protein and 170 calories and it tastes fine to me if a bit thin. I will probably just stick to it and try to jazz it up with flavors or adding fruit sometimes.

I am using non fat greek yogurt and adding frozen fruit, about 25 g per cup.

It's an aussie company all organic, no fillers or crap. It's also not overly sweet. (you can always add stevia or sweetener if you want) If it's a little plain for you, you can always jazz it up with a shot of coffee or a handful of frozen berries. With vanilla the possibilities are endless.

I love anything tart over sweet so I want to make this:

I'd leave out the Stevia so it's more tart.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
