Post Opters- did your hungry go away forever or return?

Recommended Posts

I got sleeved on the 23rd and underneath all the gas pain and general soreness that comes with surgery, i realize that i don't feel hungry. Now don't get me wrong, i have head hunger (i smelled some carrots and peas in another hospital room and was like "mmmm" and the same when i smelled a strawberry muffin.) however i don't feel physically hungry.

Is that going to change after i'm healed or are those of you who are much further out like that?

I'm not having trouble getting down my Clear liquids thankfully, i just am not eating/drinking for hunger snd thirst, but because i know i have to.

That loss of hunger is part of the "honeymoon" of the journey for most people. Some never lose all of their hunger, and many have it come back after 6 months or so. You will have to wait and see for yourself how your body reacts, and do take advantage of it while you can, it may not last forever. It is an awesome help where it is there though! The first part of the journey is a great time to really work on making new habits that can help you if the hunger returns.

I lost mine in the beginning, it came back after about 6 months, but it has not come back in the same force as before surgery. Best of luck!

My hunger is back for sure. I still feel full quickly but get hungry within 2 hours. I am 4 months post op. Can anyone answer if this is normal, if yes then what measures should I take?

Watch sugar and carbs, Protein first. Drink all your Water. I am not a low carber, but a lower carber... some need to cut them mostly out.

I certainly don't feel hunger the way I used to, it is a different sensation altogether. I didn't figure that out until about 5 weeks post op. But, it does return.

I feel like I get hungry like a normal person now. It happens 3 or 4 hours after my last meal, depending on what I ate at that meal. It is easy to satisfy. And it is general hunger, not an unquenchable craving for a specific food. It's easy to sit with the hunger if I need to wait a bit longer to eat. It doesn't tend to lead me into bad choices (but I do sometimes get head hunger, where food "talks to me").

I'll be 2 weeks out tomorrow And have not felt even a spec of hunger pangs but I miss food like crazy!!! I dream of it literally!! The aromas are sooo tempting and I think about when I'll be able to enjoy some faves again all the time ... In reality that Probably won't happen until February ... Seeing my family eat what they want is a bit depressing too

Glad I don't feel hunger At this stage cause I can't really have what I normally would eat so I have to look at the brighter side

Even with puréed oatmeal and cream of wheat thinned out with Water and almond milk it takes me almost 20 minutes to eat one tablespoon .. Hard to get in my Protein (50 grams) and Water requirements(6 cups) for the day too but hope that gets better with time .. I'm just tired And not in the mood to eat/drink what I'm permitted so I seem to not manage to get it all in before bed

I mixed half cup Decaf black coffee with half cup premier chocolate Protein shake today and I actually enjoyed that over taking the shake as is

Can't wait to enjoy solids one day even though I know it will have to be bits at a time

I wasn't hungry for the first couple of months. It's back now and I'm about 3 1/2 months post op. I say hungry, but it's a much milder version of what I used to call hungry. When I get hungry now, a few sips of Water takes it away.

WOW, thank you all for the awesome answers. I'm a few days post opt, and so far I think I'm just having gas/indigestion/heart burn pain. I'm definitely experiencing head hunger and I felt what I think was a small actual hunger pain my first day home because I'd only had like 28oz of my required 48oz (6 cups) of fluids for the day.

I'm just hoping that my hunger doesn't become intense and is more "normal" when it does return. Prior to WLS, when I'd get hungry, it's like all my other senses would shut off and all I could think about is when I could stuff my mouth and once I did get food I wanted to cram in as much as possible as fast as possible to turn off the "OMG I'M STARVING! FEED ME!!!" signals my body would scream at me.

I'm 9 weeks post op and like some of the others I still have hunger. But it's not all-consuming. Yesterday I went to swim at 12, without having lunch first (something I would never have done prior; I would have eaten at 11.) Afterwards I had to do an errand at Target. Long story short, I didn't eat until 2:30, and this was after a workout…At no point during my stop at Target did I have that weird "starving" mentality like, "I need to stop and get some lunch" or "what can I buy here?". I knew I had food at home and that was fine.

In the past I probably would have picked up a sandwich somewhere between the gym and the store.

Now, on Christmas Day when I was home the whole time and my job was to cook and hang out, I had more head hunger for sure. It is habitual for us (maybe we don't even realize HOW habitual) to kitchen surf, open the fridge, set out food, nibble. At one point I had a piece of leftover bacon. Why? It was there. It could have been much worse, but I think these are the types of situations I personally have to be aware of. The days of opening a bottle of wine or making a bloody mary on a holiday morning and then proceeding to cook all day are over, and have to be tempered with common sense.

I had my sleeve done July29,13, after surgery I had to force myself to drink the broth and jello. It took me all day just to eat half of the jello.I just wasn't hungry, now at almost 5 months out I still have to remind myself to eat, it's so different now than before I stayed hungery all the time, I hope it staysthis way for good.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
