Help - travel post surgery

Recommended Posts

All - I am two weeks post sleeve surgery and am meant to be going to Melbourne for my granddads 92nd birthday this Friday (that will be 16 days post surgery). I stupidly didn't ask my doctor if it was safe to fly in an aeroplane that soon after having the procedure. Can anyone help with their own experiences? It's a domestic flight within Australia. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Merry Christmas to everyone out there.

Hi my husband and I had our opp in QLD and live in Singapore. We were aloud to fly 2 weeks after opp. You will however need to wear the support socks to prevent clots and need to drink more the day before and day of flight to prevent dehydration. Good Luck hope you have a great time

Yep it is safe to fly. Wear compression socks and drink lots of Water. Take some shake powder with you and buy bottled water to make up your shakes if you must have a meal on the plane. You can ask the flight attendants if you can use their sink to wash out your shaker. Otherwise just have water or Tomato juice on the plane if you can skip eating and it is a short flight. If it's a long flight try to walk in the aisles as much as you can.

I stay in Scotland and had my surgery in France. Had my op on 18 September and flew home on 21 September. Apart from wearing DVT socks that was it and I was absolutely fine. My surgeon did not say I could not fly. A lot of people have their op in Mexico and the majority all fly to there. So you will be fine.

I am now 14 weeks after surgery and have lost 42 pounds. I feel and look like a new woman.

Good luck, enjoy the birthday party and Celebrate your new life. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2014.

I flew back from Mexico 3 days post op (as did 3 other people that had surgery the same day) No problems. Doc recommended compression stockings ( which he gave me) and to get up and walk the aisle several times if it is a longer flight.

Thank you all so much for your advice. Greatly appreciated as my surgeon is off enjoying a well deserved break in the sun. I'll be sure to drink lots of Water and wear my decompression socks. Merry Christmas to you all and may 2014 bring you all your heart desires!

42 pounds is amazing - big congratulations! Surgery in francs sounds like a nice way to do do it. Congratulations again on your amazing losses. I am now on day 16 post op and starting to feel really good. I've lost 15.4 pounds since the operation and did the pre op diet and lost another 26.4 pounds. I have a lot more to go but on my way. Best of luck to you in 2014 too and thanks for posting.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
