what should I do?

Hi,

Does anyone know any fill doctors in New Zealand? I a scheduled for a lap band surgery in Mexico 3 weeks from now, but only now am starting to realize how important the fills are, and how regular they need to be done.

I have found only 3 doctors in New Zealand who do lapband surgeries, but these all live in the North Island, about 700 miles from where I live!

Any help or advice would be appreciated. I am thinking if I can't solve this I will have to cancel my surgery.

Paul

Gday, Why are you going to Mexico if you live in New Zealand? Would it be better if you have to travel to come to Australia to be banded? There are many Docs here that fill. Susannah

Susannah,

Thanks. Several reasons. First, my wife is from the US so we will be going there anyway. Secondly, it is MUCH cheaper than in Australia. Main problem is not the surgery but the fills afterwards. Can't afford to fly to Australia every time for a fill!

Cheers,

Paul

Hey Paul, Gotcha!:Banane30: I wish you lots of luck on your trip to Mexico to be banded. Is the cost of banding too high in the land of the long white cloud also? If you have private health insurance you only have to pay $3,500 dollars out of pocket here in Australia, and that covers lifetime fills and maintenance ie revision surgery etc. Susannah

Hey Paul, I have been giving this some thought. I think you really need to have the fill doc situation organized before you commit to surgery in Mexico. I read all the time here about doctors refusing to fill patients that were banded by another surgeon. That happens both in the US and Australia. Sure it may be cheaper in the short term to be banded in Mexico, but if you can't get fills and aftercare it is going to be so hard. Fills and aftercare are vital to the longterm success of weight loss with the band.

I think it would be important to think this through carefully before you set off to Mexico.

i got banded in jan--and i can SEE and FEEL that regular fills and followup are critical to this process. do NOT go to Mexico from new zealand for surgery until you have resolved the "where am i gonna get fills" question. so far i have had one fill--that was 6 wks after surgery--and it's NOT ENOUGH RESTRICTION. i am getting 2nd fill tomorrow. one of my other acquaintances on this board said she didn't lose weight until the 3rd fill--so i can see this is a process that requires regular, frequent after-surgery care. are you going to fly to mexico 3, 4, 5 times for a fill?? no! you've got to locate someone locally to do this!

best wishes,

girlin

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
