Have you become more of a Foodie since surgery?

Recommended Posts

I kind of feel like I have. I look for recipes and watch food Network (food porn) way more than before and I have also made things that I have never made before like crab cakes and pumpkin custard. I have been finding ways to tweak recipes to my dietary needs (lower carb, high protein) and am just as excited about eating as ever. Granted, I am only four weeks post op and still on soft foods, but after the liquid and puréed stages, the soft diet is amazing. I had 7 small shrimp with a teaspoon of cocktail sauce and a couple of spoons of cheesy spinach. Pretty good. I am pretty excited about what the future holds and it's forcing me to go outside of my usual cooking/eating repertoire.

Although, these may all be musings of a food addict! Uh Oh! Oh well. Thoughts?

food addict? No I don't think a love of good food makes you an addict. I have to admit though, since we can eat so little now there is absolutely nothing wrong with appreciating good, wholesome, higher quality food. In fact, I encourage anyone who has this surgery to be a "foodie".

Well put. I find that I want better food and I will go to the store and buy 2 oz of beautiful scallops or jumbo shrimp and other things that I would never buy because I was focused on quantity over quality. I am embracing the restriction an looking forward to being truly successful at weight loss while enjoying great food. I have heard that tastes change and some even lose interest in food for a while. I guess I will just take things as they come.

I have the same issue. I'm not much of a cook, but now I read recipees all the time. I'm looking for ways to prep chicken, for example, to be moist and no carb, but I get into it and lose track of time!

More of a foodie now than before surgery, but in a really good way. Always scoping out recipes that are high in Protein and low in carbs that also incorporate healthy fats. Don't worry too much about the calorie counts anymore because how small my portions are. I savor every bite! I do also track my food on my fitness pal and find that I stay within my calorie goal most of the time.

I have found myself being the same way. Since surgery I now do all of the cooking for my wife and myself. She is tickled about that. Before surgery I was always asking her what she wanted to eat. Now I do the shopping and food preperation and she loves it. I am always looking for new exciting recipies. Especially since I primarily eat chicken, fish and vegetables. And true since we eat so little, I go to our local grocery store called Sprouts. They specialize in good wholesome fresh organic foods and beautiful fresh fish and chicken. I will also buy scallops and filets. I will have the butcher cut a cod filet for example in half and wrap each one seperately so I can fix a 4 or 5 ounce portion and split it with my wife. I love watching food porn also but what I do is tweek the recipie to make it more healthy.

You can see some of my recipies under the recipie sharing portion of the site.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
