Post surgery questions

Recommended Posts

Hi I am 23yo and just had laproscopic sleeve gastrectomy on december 17 2013. My doctors office kinda sucks at appointments and made my 1 week post op 3 weeks out so I have a few questions. My surgeon told me to continue my clear liquid diet for a week until my appointment but since my appt isnt for 3 weeks my question is what should my diet change to once the week is up tomorrow? When can I start working out? He told me not to drink through a straw but for how long? Many questions in my future lol

All very good questions.........which should be answered by your Surgeon. Call his office.

The office will only take my messages and the surgeon has not called back. How about what were your post surgery diets?

Hi cat, :P

Did your surgeon give you any written instructions?

It would be very unusual to not have a written diet plan.

Also no exercising outside of walking of course until your doctor clears you (usually six weeks)

As far as straws some doctors will say never some will clear you at some point again it can wait until you see him :)

Everyone's diet seems just a little different. Not sure if it's surgeon preference or related to technique.

Anyway I think mine is fairly conservative so should be safe. Week one was Clear Liquids with added Protein Powder that made clears, so pretty much fruit flavors, Unjury chicken Soup, or unflavored. Week two is full liquids, cream Soups, strained, Protein Shakes can be made with milk, pudding, Greek yogurt. The more solid full liquid like yogurt and pudding is about 2/4 cup. Week 3-is puréed 1/4-1/2 cup and week 4 is soft. Regular after that. Hope it helps, but please call your surgeon. Did you see a NUT? I can call mine anytime with questions and she get right back to me.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
