Anesthesia and pain medications

Recommended Posts

I seem to have developed a serious problem with main meds. When I was younger I took whatever was prescriped and basically fell asleep, I was under general anesthesia a few times, no problem, just went to sleep and woke up.

Now I can't even tolerate tylenol PM. I broke my leg a few years ago and had an awful reaction to the morphine that they gave me for pain. They gave me percacet (not sure how to spell it) to take home after my week long hospital stay and I became so paranoid that I thouht people were in my room trying to kill me and then had a Migraine the whole next day. Needless to say I didn't take another.

I got vicadin for a back injury and almost threw up in my carpool the next morning. Followed by another migraine.

I was banded on 03/05/07 - they new about my morphine problem don't know whatthey gave me but I was sooo sick that I barley made it through my barioum swallow test. I was so nauseuos that they gave me to pain killers just a battery of anti neasea meds, including the patch for motion sickness behind my ear.

I want to be prepared should I have any problems - band related or not that will not affect me this was. I don't want to risk the vomiting with my new band.

I also know that two years down the road GOD WILLING I may need plastic surgery.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

I cannot take morphine, or anything like the Viocodan, that is a derivative of codeine, I am allergic to it as well. I can take demoral, and have without issue---and hope it stays that way!

Sounds like something you might want to discuss with your Dr. to try to find something that will work with you. And maybe begin exploring other pain management techniques---bio feedback, hypnosis----to help you cope if and when you need them.

Good Luck!

Kat

Thanks- You know demarol was what they used at the hospital after things went so wrong with the morphine, I thought (because I told them that was what I reacted well to) that was what they used this time but I really don't know. I have to find out for sure. At home, I just take tylenol - what can I say - I'm more afraid of the vomiting and Migraine than the pain. Thanks again.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
